highland park mexican institution to replace sixth street bar & grill

Sixth Street Bar & Grill, the modern Industrial District pub that opened earlier this year, has shut down after less than a year of operation.

Surprisingly, the remote site surrounded by warehouses and low-income hotels had quickly become a lunch destination for patrons throughout Downtown — though owner MCC Hospitality Group did struggle to attract diners after the noon hour.

MCC is set to open up a “burger bar” concept in the Financial District later this year.

Taking the place of the pub will be the second location of Highland Park’s El Arco Iris, a family-style Mexican restaurant that’s been serving the Northeast LA community since 1964.  After a few changes, the transition is set to be completed later this year or early January.

El Arco Iris’s solid menu of central Mexican staples should prove to be a good fit with workers in the Industrial District and Downtowners craving a good sit-down experience close to home.  More information to follow soon.

UPDATE: Owner Jesse Gomez tells angelenic that the name of the restaurant will be Yxta Cocina Mexicana and will share some recipes with El Arco Iris but will have a more contemporary focus.

shewt….I really liked this place (scary-ass bus ride down notwithstanding.)

I’d been meaning to go back since the new Dash went in place, but I guess I’m too late. Too bad!

This is one of the few places I really liked in the area. It’s a shame. Glad I don’t have to deal with that crappy valet anymore though.

The bar and grill sounded like the kind of place I would have liked, but the location meant it always was forgotten when thinking of someplace to eat.

That’s freakin’ awesome! I grew up in Highland Park going to El Arco Iris. They’re probably not the best Mexican food you’ve ever had but a good value for the money and if memory serves me right, better food than La Parrilla just across the street from me. I’ll support the place.
