late to the fro-yo party: south park’s caliyogurt now open
This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.
South Park, which until now has been left out in the cold for yogurt options, is home to the latest branch of Caliyogurt, a frozen dessert chain ironically based in Florida.
With a stylish interior of bright lights, pyramidal foam wall appliques and squat outdoor chairs shaded beneath lace umbrellas, Caliyogurt stands out on a block that sees only light pedestrian traffic.
Toppings are standard — berries, nuts, granola and cereals — but it’s the yogurt that’s won me over. Caliyogurt comes in both plain and pink grapefruit.
Plain drops the kick-in-the-mouth tartness of Pinkberry, but with an equally creamy texture.
Pink grapefruit, on the other hand, is unique in frozen yogurt, retaining the acidic bitterness of grapefruit with a light and pleasant aftertaste. If you’re unsure whether you’ll enjoy the grapefruit experience, ask for a sample first.
Free WiFi should become available starting Thursday.

good lord, what’s up with those umbrellas?
Nice I think I’ll drop by the next time I’m downtown.
Yeah, the umbrellas are questionable.
Thanks for the update on this Rich. I walked by a week or so ago and saw no progress being made and wondered what had happened.
I hope this works out but the location is kind of tucked away, and if you didn’t know it was there you may never find it.
I’ll have to try this out, sort of used to the server yourself yogurt though. Hope it gets enough traffic to stay open.
Mmmm!!! I HAVE to try it!
Of course, that smoothie place across the street from 717 Ninth is pretty good, too!
There is a frozen yogurt option next to Ralphs and Cold Stone’s. I don’t understand the obsession with overpriced yogurt but it’s better than teh space being empty.
Just tried it this afternoon - the yogurt is yummy!
Stopped by the grand opening tonight and it was great! The yogurt is delicious and the people were super nice. The place is so cute - I don’t know what you guys are talking about the umbrellas being questionable…everything looked great! try the plain with pomegranates! the menu said they also have smoothies and fruit slushies…haven’t tried those yet.
so happy to have this great new addition to the neighborhood! highly suggest everyone swing by for a tasty yogurt. and they are open til 10.
I’ve tried all the yogurt places downtown. Caliyogurt has the best tasting plain yogurt. for reals
Forget coldstone’s and the other places!
the yogurt at caliyogurt is the best ive tasted so far
and i always come with my dog after dinner to eat it.
Caliyogurt has catipulted to top of my tart frozen yogurt list. It’s just right. For reference, here is my list:
1. Caliyogurt
2. Pinkberry (very close second)
3. Cefiore
4,000. Yogurtland
I agree, Fred. Just tried it today and was very impressed. The pink grapefruit is my new fave.
how much do they cost? is it reasonable?
Just stopped in today - great yogurt and loved the ambiance of the owner and the vibe.
I live nearby and wasn’t sure about this place. I liked when the space was a tucked away coffee shop, but apparently that didn’t work out.
Anyway — this place is AWESOME! You can tell they actually care about teh quality of the ingredients. While similar to Pinkberry, I like this consistency of this yogurt better. It’s a little more smooth. They didn’t skimp on the toppings, had good stuff like pomegranate, and even fresh cut the bananna right on top.
More than anything, I appreciate that this isn’t just a chain. It’s a good place that prides itself on quality. The woman who worked there was super nice, and even came outside and gave a few samples to my dog!
@Chris: It is a chain, but a spread-out one, with a store in Torrance and the rest Back East.
