Michael Ilic and his business partner Oliver Rosen have plans to begin feeding Fashion District denizens possibly as soon as July 1. Their new restaurant, Gram and Papas -- a homely name considering the fashionista setting -- is to be located at 9th and Los Angeles, just half a block from the California Market Center.
The name Gram and Papas is a tribute to the owners' grandparents. The concept: "high-end quick service food with a focus on simple combinations of fresh, house-prepared ingredients.” It is essentially “slow food fast,” where flavorful, labor-intensive fare meets the fast-paced lifestyle of working Angelenos.
What can one expect from the dining experience?
“We are striving for a smart and efficient design that is comfortable and hospitality focused,” says Ilic.
Gram and Papas is intended as a salad and sandwich-based lunch establishment offering small and big plates from $4 to $15. Their beverage offerings are to include “intelligenstia coffee and teas as well as fresh juices and exciting blended drinks.” Say no more… sounds delicious already!
Ilic plans to open initially for lunch, then extend service for breakfast and dinner as business grows.
For those of you unable to trek to the Fashion District mid-day, fear not. Gram and Papas plans to have delivery service. Take-out and catering will also be available.
Stayed tuned for First Look coverage closer to the restaurant’s debut.

The term “slow fast-food” is not a good choice of words. It brings to mind poor-quality food that takes a long time to serve.
I think they mean “slow food” fast.
And if they really mean “slow food,” as in the “slow food” movement, then I am thrilled.
If they are just throwing around buzz words, like some other restaurants in DT have done, then not so much. Hopefully, these guys get it. And aren’t going to be serving stuff like organic, farmer’s market greens fresh from the vacuum-sealed bag etc.
Paul and Peter-
I assure you Mr. Ilic is all about the slow food movement, but they are doing it in a way that you don’t have to sit down and wait. This is meant to be high quality “slow food” where the order-to-arrival time is just minutes because the slow part of the cooking has been done in advance.
bad gimmick. the food and space should speak for itself.
I see no gimmick. I see the great intention to serve meals that traditionally take a longer dining time, but served in a higher bpm cafe setting. But ultimately, regardless, the food shall speak for itself.
what is “slow food.” actually a type of food or movement, or does it just mean slow food in the literal sense?
What is the exact location for this place? Anybody know?
