Downtown Los Angeles Blog

it’s official: blu l.a. cafe opens tomorrow

This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.

Well, the wait is finally over.  With over a year spent in planning and development, Blu LA Cafe, the early-morning and late-night eatery in the Pacific Electric Lofts, is set to open tomorrow — Tuesday, November 11.

Even before opening, the cafe has helped transform this gritty stretch of 6th Street, adding planters, seating and signage to a nondescript corner of the building.

Classic American breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served, catering to Historic Core residents aching for an alternative to tried-and-true local restaurants.  A full menu is available, and doors open at 7:00am.

Will you be there opening day? Let us know!

Look for me here on Opening Day. Blu LA Cafe has already been a supporter of the neighborhood by sponsoring deserts at an art opening up the street, plus they are really genuine about there concept to create a new feel to the neighborhood. If the food is good, I hope to bring Blue LA Cafe into my breakfast/lunch rotation. Good luck guys, you have my support. Edgar Varela

Menu looks awesome (just wish the prices were listed too.) I’ll totally be there…

I agree, I don’t like it when restaurants omit prices on the menus. I love eating out but can’t afford doing it all the time. Not showing prices tells me the place is for people who don’t have to worry about how much they’ll end up paying. In some fancier places I assume that is the case and sadly avoid them, but I hope that is not the case of Blu LA, I look forward to another nice neighborhood eatery!

It’s a block away from my apartment, and the menu looks totally yummy! I will definitely be there (and more than once, if the food is good).

definitely want to check it out!

mmmmm..damn that menu got me hungry.
I think i will have 2 eggs (3 is really too much) with mushrooms and a side of french fries.
where: at home
Cost: priceless
:)
but seriously i will give it a shot at least once, hoping the prices are not too high. But maybe the building and ambiance make it worth it?
The Banana Polenta sounds really yummy.
Overall the menu looks like its hearty and comforting, right on.

They’re right across the street from us - Can’t wait to try it ! Wish they had more veggie options though - but I’ll try the ones they do have - But hey, a cafe that’s open till 11pm and sometimes 2am across the street… beggars can’t be choosers!

I just told Alex to head down there with the baby…hopefully the stroller can make it into the door.

Awesome addition to the neighborhood! The best part is the hours - open late, which is especially great for residents in the immediate area!

Didnt expect too much but Wow I went in there today for lunch and they were packed! Great job for opening day. Food was delicious =)

Had a late lunch at Blu today and the food was excellent. They told me they got swamped today and were surprised by the support. I think this place will do well.

I didn’t make it over there today yet but thinking I’ll hold off; I know some folks who weren’t near as thrilled with the service, so maybe a few days should be a better judge. Wondering if they could have considered a soft opening to get the kinks out a little?

Was there around 3:30 and they said they were closed for a meeting. Said to check back in 30 minutes so I called an hour later to be told they would reopen after 6p. Kind of a disappointment : (

Will give them a shot tomorrow since I live in the building.

The onsite chef used to work for Gordon Ramsey from Hells Kitchen so I was expecting the food to be top notch. Definately worth every penny.

16 jim winstead { 11.12.08 at 9:11 am }

and it’s a lot of pennies. the steak panini was $12.50.

(or would have been if they got it to us in less than two hours, but that’s a whole different story.)

Went by last night for dinner.

Oddly, there weren’t enough chairs for the tables, one group had to bring in a chair from outside. There aren’t any tables larger than a four-top and tables, tables are circular and can’t be put together easily. Wait staff was limited and frazzled. They were not serving the full menu that was handed to my party.

Paid $45 + tip for a lukewarm steak + cold mashed sweet potatoes and a burger + salad. Took nearly two hours from arrival to check.

I’m hoping, per the comments above, that breakfast and lunch service are a little better.

If they’re going to survive in downtown with current prices they’ll need to work on service and the value on the plate.

18 Alex { 11.12.08 at 10:48 am }

its 1,2000 sq. ft and youre complaining there is not enough tables. There is a reason you are not a designer

19 Richard { 11.12.08 at 12:41 pm }

Average food. Below average service. Way too expensive. Next …

20 jim winstead { 11.12.08 at 1:13 pm }

one of the owners of j&j said that yesterday, all of their regulars tried out the new place. today, they were all back.

celia said it looked a little slow today for lunch. maybe everyone is over at ma petit cafe.

21 Jeanne { 11.12.08 at 1:16 pm }

It was their first day, give them a break!

22 LA Lola { 11.12.08 at 2:10 pm }

Ay, Dios mio!

Umm, yeah, there’s a reason why the prices aren’t listed online. $13 for a burger and a wimpy little salad. $3 for iced tea. $12.50 for the steak panini with about 4 slices of steak. LA Cafe has paninis and Nickel has burgers for 5 dollars less….

Food was good, service was very friendly and attentive, desserts looked delicious…but at those prices, I’m not sure I’ll be back too often, if only because I can’t afford $20 lunches these days.

23 Johnthebarman { 11.12.08 at 2:14 pm }

The food was good, but i agree about the prices. The price point of the Nickel keeps it packed.

24 K-Town { 11.12.08 at 3:32 pm }

I’ll give this place a try. Most restaurants take a few weeks to work out the kinks. Those prices are bit steep for me though - downtown needs to have a few more casual restaurants with Blossom prices. The whole $13.00 burger thing doesn’t really allow this place to be on my list of recession dining options.

25 Andrew Ruiz { 11.12.08 at 3:42 pm }

I agree, it was there first day…give them a break. How were you on your first day at work?

26 jim winstead { 11.12.08 at 7:20 pm }

i am totally sympathetic to the first-day service and quality hiccups, but they flat-out forgot about us, which is pretty far beyond a hiccup.

and first-day jitters certainly doesn’t explain the prices.

27 Brian { 11.12.08 at 11:47 pm }

I checked them out online to see what the prices were, and from the comments here I now know why they aren’t listed.

Downtown needs more places like Nickel where eating a decent meal doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

28 Scott Mercer { 11.13.08 at 2:09 am }

I agree with the CW…service was sketchy. Food was good, but waaay overpriced. I must give points in their favor for staying open late though. Perhaps I will drop in come evening time for a slice of cake and a coffee.

But if I want a sandwich, JJ’s is right across the street, about half the price, and 95% as tasty.

29 Christy { 11.13.08 at 9:27 pm }

Very diasppointed. They had hardly no veggie items (an LA eatery without a veggie burger option???) so I got the PB&J - my boyfriend got the Blu Cafe Burger and we split a water - The bill with tip was $27. and we were still hungry when we left. Portions were SO small, tables were way too small, and prices were way too high. Thank goodness for JJ’s cafe across the street. We’ll never go back to Blu unless we’re going to split a piece of cake - that’s the only thing there in our budget.

30 kellsy { 11.14.08 at 1:27 pm }

$10 for a caprese salad that cosisted of 4 cherry tomatoes and 5 small mozzarella cheese balls. I was a little insulted to be honest. However, when I was there it wasn’t busy and the waitress was friendly and gracious. I bought a few (3) pasteries to bring home and had a pelligrino with my salad. With a 20% tip it cost me $27. Yowza!!

31 Irene { 11.18.08 at 4:25 pm }

Gave it a try on Sunday afternoon. We were told the kitchen was closed, which is fine because we just wanted some coffee and pastries. They wouldn’t let us order from the counter, so instead we sat at a table where we were ignored for 40 minutes. Finally went back to the counter and they apologized and sent one of the THREE servers to us, but not immediately. We probably won’t be back for a real meal any time soon, which is unfortunate since the location is perfect. I hope the french dip place next door is less disappointing.

32 Sarah { 11.23.08 at 12:42 pm }

This place has potential, its only week two. I already noticed they knocked off about 5-6 bucks on each menu item which is great. My boyfriend and I can actually afford to come here now, lol. We will definately be making more trips here since we live across the street. I see what youre saying about the servers, but just give them some time to figure out their kinks, the food is definately worth the wait.

33 Jacob { 11.24.08 at 11:58 pm }

Oh, man. Great food, great atmosphere, and all friendly faces inside. The seared PB+J gets a 10 out of 10, for tastiness as well as concept, while the Blu LA Cafe burger gets a 10 out of 10 for its tastebud-exploding flavor. I can’t wait to go back—I have the hunger shakes now just thinking about it.
