Downtown Los Angeles Blog

ma petit bakery and cafe to open thursday

This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.

We’ve covered the journey of Ma Petit and its owners over the past year, and we’ve seen the struggle it is to open a business — especially a restaurant — in a historic building.

But all that waiting is coming to an end now that the French countryside-inspired cafe has passed final inspections.  Chef-owner Nary Kim tells angelenic that doors will open this Thursday at 6:30am.

Expect affordable breakfast, lunch and dinner options with baked goods and fresh bread filling a niche for Downtowners looking for options closer to home than Ralphs.

Oh hell yes!!! Look at that menu- I was kind of down on the concept of a “bakery” but a bakery w/ BBQ Tri-Tip Calzones, Sesame Shrimp, Meatballs w/ Bolognese sauce, Seeet Potato Fries… that’s my kind of bakery! The breakfast menu looks amazing too. I REALLY hope that they get the business they need as I will be a regular along with my stops next door at Origami…

I too think the menu looks great - with a good combination of comfort foods (mac and cheese, chicken pot pie, lasagna) , and healthy foods - (many salads and many fish entrees) , and those prices - I dont see anything on the menu that is over $10. They are certainly starting with a winning combination. I heard though that they wont open until 11am tomorrow (Thursday) morning.

Hello, French pastries, welcome to the neighborhood! Finally, a real croissant made right here in downtown LA. Just had one this evening and it was heavenly. That place on Broadway that is touted as the “best croissant” in downtown does not even compare — it is an insult to call what that other place serves a croissant. Also tried the carrot soup which was very good. Can’t wait to go back to try other things on the menu. FYI — Ma Petit has reward cards for frequent customers so be sure to ask for one.

I agree, the croissants were excellent! I also had a banana danish which was delicious. Our muffins were a bit dry, but I won’t hold that against them on their first day.

It’s been said before, but I’ll repeat it: Nothing over $10 on the menu. The Ma Petit burger is around $8.00 and is really good. If they can keep these prices and the quality of the food, it will be a destination for sure.

I went for lunch today with 2 coworkers, and although the staff seemed rather overwhelmed I will be back. It took me a while to get my order because they got the receipt mixed up with my boss’. My coworker got a turkey with bacon sandwich instead of the turkey with avocado she ordered. I had to ask twice for the chocolate croissant I ordered but never got. Despite all that, service was great and the food was yummy. They handed out these yummy little pastries for people to try. They didn’t forget about my order even though it took a while before my food finally got to me. When I asked the 2nd time for my chocolate croissant, I was given an extra chocolate chip cookie for my troubles. :) I can’t wait to try all the stuff they have on the menu!

I went on Thursday and altho it was DAY ONE for them, service was great and the croissants were really good, and priced right. My gal and I returned for a late lunch on Saturday and even after being overwhelmed with the protest crowd, (NO ON 8!!! keep it up!) every last worker there had a fantastic attitude. We spit a ham and brie sandwich on walnut bread and a bowl of cream of mushroom soup. The sandwich was great, you could even taste the olive oil used to make the walnut bread… the soup was very, very good, wish I had ordered my own bowl… BUT the surprise treat were the homemade fries!!! out of the park! I live one block away, so I’ll be wearing this place out!

We thought we would make a casual stop in for breakfast this morning… wrong - this is the best breakfast downtown. The pastries are fantastic, the chef is off the hook and the ambiance is soooo cool. GO GO GO

Tried it for the first time today, definitely will go back. Had a Turkey sandwich on a great French Baguette with cranberries. Plenty of seating at 12pm, and all the food arrived in a timely manner (4 people). Everyone enjoyed their food. The desserts looked really good, but I didn’t have any room. On another note, Lot 44 coffee next door was very empty, but maybe the Trio of Origami, Lot 44, and Ma Petit will all help each other. They did run out of menus today, but I will go back to try other things, can’t wait.

yep, the food and the pastries there are pretty darn good. i had the blueberry waffle - yum!

The french toast is delicious and you can’t beat the bakery for croissants and danishes. They taste like they do in Europe. Super cheap too. We need to support this place!

16 Not a fan { 12.16.08 at 5:14 pm }

I love the idea of more bakeries / cafes opening up but the quality still isn’t there. Had brunch there over the weekend. Orange juice tasted like its plastic bottle (and was concentrated, at that) and the coffee is lame.

Crossing my fingers that not only will this place serve better things but that people are more discriminating. European this place is not.

I have to agree with “Not a Fan”. I went with 3 of my co-workers and we all were underwhelmed by our food. I had a turkey sandwich and they used the cheapest turkey meat they could find. The cupcakes had rancid frosting and the Tira Misu was stale.

There’s a reason their prices are so low, I suppose.
