‘hygge’ begins construction phase

Hygge Restaurant in Luma, Downtown Los AngelesHygge, Downtown’s first Danish bakery and restaurant, is starting construction after a lengthy approvals process set in motion over a year ago.

The 6,362-square-foot space sits in the ground floor of South Group’s Luma building at 11th and Hope, featuring “European comfort food” and a significant bakery and lounge component.

Owner Ray Lee has previously told angelenic that “Hygge,” which translates roughly as “a cozy place” in Danish, is pronounced “hue-geh” (if that helps any).

Lee was unavailable for comment by the time of this writing, and no estimated opening date has been announced.

I haven’t seen anyone working on the space yet but this may have occurred in the last few days.

As recently as a week or two ago they were filming movies in the area and using this space as storage and a lunch room.

I live in the Luma, and I can indeed confirm that construction has started. They’ve started to frame out the interior partitions.

However, I’ve only seen a couple workers at a time, so I don’t think they’re in a particular hurry.

Det blir hyggeligt! Hopefully they call a certain pastry “Wienerbrood” rather than “Danish” or any other name that isn’t what it truly is….Hopefully they serve Carlsberg/Tuborg beer too to stick with the Danish theme. You can’t discount the importance of coffee and of course the pastries, etc.. Can’t wait to stop by and check it out and support a local business. Good luck!

This will be a nice addition to the 11th street corridor along Grand to Flower/Fig/LA Live…Bottlerock continues build out in my building as well…don’t loose hope, it has been a long time but workers are still moving forward…Rivera on Flower St side is going through final inspections now.

Great to hear it’s moving forward. But I have to admit I was even more excited by another change on 11th Street. After over 6 months of not working the street lights along 11th from about Olive to Fig. have finally been fixed.
