ground-floor goodness: spitz opening tuesday

This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.

Capping a busy November in Downtown LA, the “Home of the Döner Kebab” moves into its own new home tomorrow with a soft opening to the general public.

The Little Tokyo location is the second for the popular venture by Bryce Rademan and Robert Wicklund and has been a year in the making.

Most striking to passersby are the earthy, metallic architectural pieces lining the ceiling, made of reclaimed materials and furniture (by Celeste Korthase Studio).  Photos do no justice; we recommend checking it out for the beautiful interior space alone.

Make no mistake, though:  You’re coming here for the Turkish-Mediterranean fare that has earned accolades across town at its original Eagle Rock location.

The menu is simple, with the signature ground meats tucked into focaccia, as an entree plate, or wrapped in lavash.  Falafel, sides and a few extras complete the flavor combination, but also look for beer, wine and sangria.

Opening-day hours are forthcoming, but be prepared for the restaurant and bar to be open until midnight daily.

Yes! Anyone know when the supposed “Grand Opening Party” is going to be? I signed a signup sheet way back when @ the Eagle Rock location but haven’t heard anything since.

Way off topic but important for people that love art, please check this out. MOCA might have a future. http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-broad-2008nov22,0,1636291.story

It’ll be nice having Spitz open, I’ve been waiting for awhile. The place looks amazing.

It’s open finally and the food is good. I tried it this evening. I had the chicken doner—very tasty. And the sweet potato fries were good too.

I had the falafel and sweet potato fries tonight, both were great.
Love the upbeat music and the bar being right there. This place is great.

The place does look amazing but the food is just so meh. Dumbed down ME food. Mushy falafel, doner over sweet potato fries? Bleh, Eagle Rock can keep this poser.

I have to agree with Tony on this one that the food is nothing special. Although I loved their sweet potato fries, I wasn’t too fond of the 2 veggie items they had on the menu. I have tried both and wasn’t really satisfied and I do think that they overcharge for the foods simplicity and order-and-sit appeal.

Carlos: I can’t vouch for their veggie items, but I can say their ‘classic’ doner was great.
