activity on 755 figueroa site raises false hopes
Over the last couple weeks, dozing equipment and grading activity in the “pit” next to the 7th+Fig parking structure has prompted enthusiastic speculators to suggest site preparation may be underway for Maguire Properties’ proposed 50-story office tower.
In short, it’s not happening yet, folks.
Though Maguire continues pre-development work on the project securing entitlements and the required 50% tenant pre-leasing, considering the company’s highly-publicized financial struggles (even in our ripening office market), they are in no shape to begin erecting Downtown’s first major office tower in over fifteen years.
Also, such an event would be met with media coverage and Villaraigosa’s blessing.
Here’s my take:
A couple years ago, a covered walkway linking the multi-story parking structure to the shopping plaza was demolished, blocking direct pedestrian access to the lower level’s rear entrance.
Today, foliage removal and a newly carved path where that walkway once stood indicate all the efforts are for walkway reconstruction.
Yes, nothing exciting to see here, but at least all you motorists can look forward to a shortcut to the lovely “International Food Court.”
-with ‘downtown downturn’, could maguire still fly?

It was demolished because it collapsed during a heavy rainstorm a few years ago. I was puzzled because there was/has been zero media coverage that I’m aware of.
The loss of this walk-way just made getting to the Macy’s a bit less convenient. It also messed up the business of the ShoeWiz guy whose shop was nearby. Not sure it ever recovered.
Why it has taken so long to restore it is puzzling. I’d assume their property insurance would cover the loss. Then again, management of this retail property seems pretty lackadasical.
I was wondering why it took so long also. It made getting to Gold’s gym much more convenient.
The walkway also provides a dry pathway into the Ernst & Young tower save for a few steps from the elevator to the building entrance. Fortunately it hasn’t rained the past two years so that hasn’t been a problem.
