oh thank heaven! ‘upscale’ 7-eleven heading to broadway
This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.
Shoppers on Broadway may have been deprived of donuts and cheap coffee in years past, but that’s history now that 7-Eleven has been signed for the southwest corner of 5th and Broadway, in the Shybarry Lofts’ corner unit.
Curt Truman of Truman Inc., the leasing representative for the deal, lets us know that not only will the location be one of the chain’s newer “upscale, gourmet” concepts — selling produce and other items not usually found in other locations — but there will be five more of them to follow throughout Downtown.
More along the lines of a Famima!! convenience shop than a traditional 7-Eleven, the new location will feature plasma-screen TVs and an outdoor seating/patio area.
Similar concepts in Austin, Texas, feature grilled panini sandwiches, baked items and fresh salads.
The expansion follows franchisee Matt Mattu’s successful launch of Downtown’s first 7-Eleven, at the Mandel Lofts at 7th and Olive.
While no opening date has been announced, the Mandel Lofts location has the distinction of being the only establishment tracked by angelenic to open on schedule.
With Famima!! on the west and 7-Eleven on the east, Downtown’s super-fast convenience needs should be met for years to come.
Thanks to Curt Truman for the tip. Got one of your own? Let us know!

Suh-weet…a 7-11 only one block away! Can’t wait.
Great, more places for bums to get their daily energy drinks.
To be fair, bums do get their daily energy drinks at Ralphs Fresh Fare too.
i guess this means major chains are beginning to think downtown LA is worth the investment. This is always a good thing because contrary to what some believe, a mix of big box retailers/franchises is always needed to blend in with the indies.
Hey, A, are you calling me a bum?
I wonder how long it will take Barry Shy to ruin a perfectly good 7-11? If anyone could do it, it’d be him.
I need a daily energy drink, too. It’s just American.
I agree with #6 but since I don’t want to be sued I’ll just stop now.
Slurpees for all
Quick place to pick up some brews too!
Hey , Bert . IF the shoe fits, eh?
the 7-Eleven at 7th and Olive is always busy when I’ve gone in daytime.
.
But ive never been at night.
Definitely good news some competition for Famima, that should start some price wars between the two- to attract more customers
Finally - Broadway needs a 7-11 and more retail chains. The streets are packed and people are moving downtown at rapid speed. Rock on. The one on 7th and Olive is always busy and you can actually get in and out pretty quick and it’s clean.
So glad there’ll be another 7 eleven. The one on 7th and Olive is great, couldn’t stop laughing after I saw a hugh Rudolph reindeer. It has brought Christmas cheer to the area and can’t wait for this new one to do the same.
This rocks! I have lived around the corner for years and I have been DIEING for a convenience store to go in close to me. I occasionally go to the one on 7th and Olive, and thank God it is the same owners because these stores are totally different -they have changed my whole perspective of 7-11’s. They are truely upscale! I never thought I would hear myself be so excited about a 7-11..
Does that mean that electronics store that’s there now will have to move? Oh no! That’s means we’ll have to go to one of the other 2 dozen shops on Broadway selling cheap radios and CD players…how depressing.
This store is undoubtedly a good thing. I ran into Dan Fugardi and Curt Truman, the guys that are doing the deal, and it makes sense that they are behind the scenes of downtowns improvement. I have known them for some time and always see them around town -great guys and always taking it to the next level. This franchise is being handled by the right people with solid owners who always have solid staff. One more nice addition to our growing city!
does anyone know which storefront 711 will be taking? Is it the electronic store? There are several empty spaces below our building
You are absolutely right no.13! The Chistmas decorations are out of his world. I encorouge everyone to visit the store and please take your kids you”ll have a blast. These owners do a wonderful job on every occasion since they have opened on 7th. There is no decoration like this in downtown.
This will be “super convenient” - and im surprised there hasn’t been a famima opened in the historic district. Well, until they sell beer or wine, it wont be that important anyways!
