Sunday Brunch at Tranquility BaseNever wake up Sunday morning again wondering where to eat!

Initial reports of ticket losses and limited dish availability kept my opinionated palate away from Tranquility Base’s new brunch offering early on, reserving my visit out of fairness and courtesy to a restaurant always on the mark for dinner.

One month and many lunar phases later, Tranquility has got it together.

Early Sunday afternoon, my dining companion and I arrived to a well-occupied restaurant — most people had opted for the air-conditioned dining room over the outdoor patio in this weekend’s dry heat spell. After a quick and cheerful hello from the hostess, we plopped ourselves down in a large booth and began to contemplate the simple menu.

Two tangy-sweet mimosas — one orange, one pomegranate — with a side of Grand Marnier french toast ($12)… deciding that much was easy.

Relying on recommendations from the waiter for the real food, we hit both sides of aisle by ordering the Scotch Eggs (two poached eggs, smoked salmon on English muffins topped by dill hollandaise, $12) and Scrambled Eggs simmered in Salsa (a Mexican scramble in spicy red salsa served with tortillas and refried beans, $9).

Within only a few minutes, our attentive waiter reappeared with two beautifully-presented platters — and the third… well, can Mexican food ever look tidy on the plate? Even though the salsa was a bit runny and spilled over into the beans, the combination of flavors hit the spot — the kind of meal you’ll find yourself craving again later in the week.

Simple and succinct best describes the Scotch Eggs, two carefully stacked mounds on a clean white saucer, a complete one-eighty from the other egg dish. Though they may have been ever so slightly dry and fishy, it’s our own fault for requesting the vinegary hollandaise on the side. Still, a top choice, and would order it again.

But through most of the meal, with the french toast patiently waiting in short whiffing distance, we found ourselves eating in anticipation — eyes locked on the sweet goods. Moist, topped with powdered sugar, fresh berries and served with a light, natural syrup, does brunch get any better than this?

Bloody Mary Bar at Tranquility BaseFor me, no. But if you’re a fan of tomato juice and vodka, then yes.

Offered only during brunch hours, the build-your-own Bloody Mary bar may be reason enough to shuffle over to 8th and Grand on a lazy Sunday morning. From pepperoncinis to wasabi powder to Tabasco sauce, find all the “fixins” you could possibly want to customize that classic spicy cocktail.

Personally, I’d settle for champagne with fruit juice any day — and Traquility offers a choice of four: orange, pomegranate, peach and pear. You can’t find that at Pete’s or Pacific Dining Car.

Sipping on my mimosa with a full stomach and listening to the soft reggae, I was already planning my return. Three dishes and two cocktails for under $60, a fair price for a proper brunch? You decide.

Thanks for the review- I really liked that place the one time I was there, and am dying to go back. Now I just need to decide if it will be for brunch or dinner first.

The build your own bloody station was very cool, my eggs Bennies were tasty but my wife’s Huevos ranchero’s were anything but huevos rancheros.
Crispy tortilla shell bowl with scrambled eggs and cheese???
Other then that great brunch option for DT.

Seems kind of expensive for what you had.

I’ve enjoyed their brunch a few Sundays now. Mother’s Day being the most recent was a nice experience and my guest of honor truly enjoyed both the decor, hospitality, and the food. David and Kelly, the owners, are two of the most welcoming people. The outdoor patio is so comfortable and inviting, the menu offerings are true brunch fare without be overwhelminly numerous, and the bloodymary bar is so much fun. If you haven’t yet been, go, and if you have been, go back.

was walking by mid afternoon on wednesday and a nasty sewer stink was all around there at the entry/corner of the SKY lofts building.

I went to there grand opening for there brunch last month (if I remember correctly) and gave them a horrible review on Yelp.com. I hope they have improved as it was pretty bad and generic, it would take free food and drinks to get me back there again. Good luck to the new adventurers, maybe you will have better luck.

So much negativity… come on, a 3-day weekend is coming up!

Bloody mary is not bottomless, $10.00 will get you a pint glass with about a jigger of Vodka on the rocks

this place caters to everyone, great night life, awesome food, patio/fire pit for all occassions. This place is the best thing to hit downtown in a long time.
