kelly’s coffee aims for soft opening this week
Since all the rumors were true and Chapman finally “came out” as rental, Kelly can now get on with her life.
Kelly’s Coffee & Fudge — patiently sitting complete for many weeks as the The Chapman got itself sorted out — will be holding their long-anticipated entrance into the Downtown market in a few days.
Both the franchise owner and company president Mary Gerlick state doors will most likely open “softly” on Thursday or Friday, but just to be safe, don’t expect to get your fudge and frappe fix until Monday, May 26.
For all of you non-addicts, Kelly’s also offers a selection of sandwiches, salads, smoothies, teas and baked goods. Anticipated hours are 7:00am to 7:00pm daily.

Hmm, isn’t “Fudge Factory” a rather nefarious euphemism for an obvious bodily function. People should really have noticed that sooner.
Actually, the name is “Kelly’s Coffee AND Fudge Factory” and either way, please focus on being supportive of a new business opening in what can still be considered a somewhat risky downtown.
Milk, Milk, Lemonade . . .
Does the fudge taste like coffee. I don’t like candy or ice cream or anything that has the flavor of coffee
I love coffee and fudge.
Downtown has “risky” areas, but on broadway there is not much “risk” really. If it were opening on skid row then that would be a true “risk”.
Downtown has areas/pockets of good and bad just like any major “urban”- metropolitan city.
I love LA and Downtown. I welcome the big and small, corporate and independents alike.
- this “fudge packer” thinks anyways …lol.
If the shop is smart, their menu and pricing will have items to entice the masses of busriders waiting outside its door to make a purchase. If they can do that, they’ll be fine. If not, me and my three kids stopping by on the weekend (we live within half a block) won’t be enough.
I passed by the other and it seems like the building is no longer “Chapman Flats,” it is just “The Chapman,” and has banners all over it advertising “LOFTS FOR LEASE.” Just when I was thinking, “Gee the Chapman Flats tried to distinguish themselves from the crowd by not using the L word in their building.” Too late.
And no, not that “L word.” “Lofts” was the word I was thinking of.
It’s kind of dumb in most cases since they aren’t really lofts. (PE Lofts has some, but only on the top floor.)
My boyfriend and I just stopped by Kellys in an effort to be supportive of them opening tonight. We got in there at 7:45 and they were about to close at 8pm, decent hours I think. We spoke to the owner, Moris, who was really friendly and seems open to suggestions. He’s eager to open for later hours when the Orpheum has concert nights and we told him about Last Remaining Seats and he was excited and is now going to talk to the Orpheum and Million Dollar Theatre to find out what other events they have so he can be sure to stay open late. Kellys had several tables and counters for hanging out, will have free wifi, and had a couple tv’s. It should be a cool place and the owner seems really excited to do well. He also owns the jewelry store next door on the corner and is making it much nicer with mirrors and chandeliers. I hope it does well!
You must have just missed me. I got there around 7:15. Great coffee, and even though their fudge is too sweet for my liking, that’s just personal preference. They should start taking credit/debit cards tomorrow, though I’m wondering about WiFi…
Just came back from there. Had an ice coffee–even in this ever so slight drizzly day it’s not cold enough for a hot cup–and I wasn’t ballzy enough to try any sweets, although they look great.
In the more than 2 decades of being a local visitor downtown, and now living here, I thought how nice it was to sit down across the street from the Tower. When was the last time someone was able to do that?
I think Marc points out one of the sublime pleasures of life downtown. Being surrounded by distinguished, historic and/or astonishing architecture and simply watching the world go by. I had not thought of it, but he is absolutely correct. One of Kelly’s great virtues is its location across the street from the lovely Tower Theater. I’ll be sure to sample their wares this weekend and partake the view.
The only bad thing is that they’re off of 8th Street and not Broadway itself.
Just got back from Kelly’s. Had a latte and a danish. Met the owner and asked him about wifi and he said it will be in by next week. Also, I told him about opening later during Orpheum shows, he’s a nice guy. Also, the owner was smart by hiring primarily Spanish speaking employees. During my visit I sat and watched people come in who were mainly Latino. They were also playing Spanish pop music, which I didn’t mind. It was nice to sit back and enjoy my latte looking out to the Tower Theater, it was a good feeling… Everyone should go out and make it a point to support Kelly’s..
Good, good, good. I like what I’m hearing about the ownership catering to the Latinos at their door step. Make ‘em feel welcome and give them a product which gives value and, yes, they will be back. Yeah, they ain’t making the incomes of many of us. But, they too will respond to value and they enjoy being catered to by a quality establishment. Sounds like there is something here for everyone.
I’ll put the place to the test this weekend with my kids.
remember David, not all latinos are low income or working class. Yes the area where Kelley’s is located has a majority of working class-lower income shoppers-commuters because of the use of Broadway as a transportation hub.
I just wanted to clarify that being Hispanic/Latino does not equal poor.
this is what bothered me -
“Yeah, they ain’t making the incomes of many of us.”
it read like a direct put down.
And remember the majority of the population don’t even make 5 figures (individually not counting married-joint etc), including the readership of this site.
And yes i’m Hispanic-Latino, 5th generation , Bennington graduate and i’ve been on both sides of the income scales.
Kelley’s owner is smart to try to attract some of the local shoppers-commuters. The Hispanic-Latino population is a growing demographic while others are declining. And i’m not even counting illegal immigration.
It seems like the illegal immigration issue went from just “illegal immigration” to it being a “mexican” problem.
They come from Canada, Asia, Europe, not just from our neighbor to the south
I just wanted to stand up for those with no voice.
Thanks.
P.S.- Borders Books is looking to open a big shop in downtown la, still undecided on location, but LA live is on the short list.
Sorry for the typo- ^ Kelly’s.
NoNameLatino, where exactly did you see the word “all” preceding Latinos in my post. Clearly, you didn’t read it very carefully, did you? Where exactly did you read that I was suggesting all Latinos are poor?
Now normally, I’d say excuse me for being rude. But, pal/honey, your feelings are quite easily bruised. My hunch is you are looking for your feelings to be bruised. Clearly, you are well-schooled in playing the victim. I’m sure your professors at Bennington would be pleased. Although, given your limited mathematical comprehension, I’m not surprised at your various mental errors. Your assertion that the majority of the population (presumably of the U.S.) makes less than $10,000 annually staggers belief.
The whole point of my post, which you actually agree with, it is a very good thing the owners of this fine establishment are recognizing the people walking outside their doors are prospective customers. There is a real social divide in downtown between the affluent newcomers and the poor masses who work and shop on Broadway. Kelly’s thinks they can cater to both ends of the economic spectrum. I applaud them for this. You, for reasons unclear to me, assume I’m on the side of the affluent who want to gentrify the neighborhood and transform Broadway into a sanitized retail cooridor catering to some hipster elite living some loft life fantasy.
Pal/honey, I’ve lived on Broadway for over ten years now. I’m the guy who champions Fiesta Broadway while my affluent neighbors simply ignore its existence. (You’ll notice this very blog couldn’t be bothered to acknowledge an event in downtown where 500,000 people attended.) Why would I be putting down the very people who I’ve chosen to live with?
Now I would have responded to your silly comment sooner. But, I was busy putting my three kids to sleep with the help of my totally illegal Mexican mother-in-law. Yeah, my wife is Mexican. Hmm, that sorta of messes up all your assumptions about me. So I’d admonish you to not make wild accusations about who people are and what you imagine they believe. Frankly, in this context you should focus on the words which people have written. I’d also admonish you to think before you start typing. Maybe ask some questions before you reveal yourself as a pinche pindajo gringo. Then again, I forgot. You’re a Bennington graduate.
My apologies to my neighbors for this interuption to your regular blog reading.
re “P.S.- Borders Books is looking to open a big shop in downtown la, still undecided on location, but LA live is on the short list.”
gee, that’s great. a chain bookstore. what will you get excited about next, applebees?
Omg! First Look: Applebees!
This is a great coffee shop. From the moment you enter, you are greeted by extremely friendly employees. My favorite item is Gelato(Almond Roasted fig). I also enjoy my Carmel Extreme Freeze on sundays. Keep up the good work.
Kelly’s has become my first stop before starting work every morning. What could be better than to start your day with the smell of pastry and fudge. Love the coffee .The employees and the owner are really nice and know me by name.
I think every one should try the Kosher hot dogs at Kelly’s coffee and Fudge Factory. I also love the Carmel Xtreme Freeze. Just Love it. The Owner is a lovely and Friendly Woman. I think we should all support her.
