spitz fans, your wait is almost over
This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.
Back in December, a barrage of restaurant reviews plastered in the windows of a 2nd Street storefront in Little Tokyo announced the pending arrival of the “Home of the Döner Kebab.”
Yes, it’s an ad blitz for Spitz.
The popular Eagle Rock eatery has received accolades from the foodie community for its Döner Kebab, a sandwich made of lamb, beef, chicken or falafel and topped with hummus, fresh veggies, tzatziki, chili sauce, served on toasted focaccia bread.
Owner Bryce Rademan tells angelenic progress on the new Hikari retail space is moving right along, after a missed spring debut.
“We are planning on opening in July of this year. It took a while to get all the permits, especially since we will have outdoor dining with beer and wine, but everything is rolling smoothly now.”
Bryce, your doors can’t open fast enough.

“It took a while to get all the permits…” Jan Perry and the City Council, where are you?
Permit reform, please.
Sounds yum! I hope they can make a shawafel sandwich too (meat and falafel in the same sammich). That would totally make my day.
Permit reform also cannot happen fast enough. Unfortunately, it’s a story I hear about everyday.
which permits are the real hold-up? if it’s the health department, isn’t that a county issue? i think the only city permits that would be a real obstacle for opening a restaurant are from the fire department. it sounds like the problem for spitz was a liquor license, which may have been a state issue.
on the retail side, the only pain i’ve noticed so far is that there is no state board of equalization office in downtown. it’s off to culver city, norwalk, or some other farther trek to the hinterlands to get a seller’s permit without waiting on the mail turnaround.
Yes, the fire department is always a big one that holds up new businesses.
One of those new-fangled sandwiches and a cold beer outside sounds perfect! I hope there are no more delays…
Gosh More choices!! ND even closer to home
man that sounds good right now..
Doner Kebab? Still sounds a little to like the Donner as in the Donner party - the group of American settlers, who were stuck in the Rockies, and resorted to cannabalism.
My wife and I laugh every time we pass that storefront, waiting for itto open. Just hope they don’t sell Soylent green too.
Ortho-Francis: Go to Los Angeles’ sister city of Berlin sometime. Doner Kebab stands are their equivalent of taco trucks.
