yogurt factory now open in the grand central market

Yogurt Factory 4 Yogurt Factory 5

After many closings in the Grand Central Market over the last few years — some due to the lack of easy access for the office lunch crowd with the shuttered Angels Flight — a new type of venture has opened.

The yogurt craze in Los Angeles has really taken the city by storm the last couple of years (ed: it may finally be at its end), thus it’s no surprise that a shop would eventually venture into LA’s oldest marketplace.

Yogurt Factory opened two weeks ago, giving the Historic Core its first yogurt cafe.

After announcing its intent to open last summer, due to contractor issues, the business was unable to open until this month.  Their original location, at Santa Monica and Bundy in West LA, has been in operation for 20 years, with the Grand Central Market now being their second store.

Yogurt Factory is self-serve, offering four tasteful flavors and giving you the opportunity to cap off your treat with as many toppings as you desire at 35 cents per ounce.  However, a “happy hour” from 4:00 - 6:00pm on weekdays brings the price down to 30 cents per ounce. Try the vanilla flavor whenever you have the chance to visit!

Ooh! I’ll have to go down and try it. I live above grand central, but don’t really shop there. There’s a delicious mexican bakery, as well as a smoothy/sandwhich shop on the hill street side. Other than that, the odors from the raw meat are quite unappetizing and make it hard to even really walk through there as well as the reports of people urinating on the produce..

Inside the market is this place called “Roast-to-go” - they have by far the best carnitas is town. there fish tacos are pretty amazing too! Go eat there!

Mike, check out the papusas (sic?). Nothing fancy, very tasty and damn cheap.

its spelled pupusas. If you guys ever venture to the Westlake/Koreatown district…they have the best cheap pupusas at LA PLANCHA on 2814 James Woods. $1.25 each one, at all times! freshly made.

Grand Central Market has some super cheap produce. I thought it was a type at first…a few weeks ago, I bought a medium sized box of strawberries for 1 buck, boxes of black berries and blue berries for 33 cents each. SUPER CHEAP.

6 pounds of bananas for a dollar at one stand in the Grand Central Market. Love this place!

I tried Roast-to-Go on a recommendation and wasn’t impressed. I had the lamb and they sure did stuff it full of meat and veggies, but it tasted horrible. Maybe I’ll try the carnitas next time, though when I went they looked pretty dried out.

I second Rich’s assessment of Roast-to-Go. Seemed to cater to the undiscriminating with heaping portions of mediocre (at best) meats.

My wife and I will check out La Plancha. What’s the cross-street?

Its in between Westmoreland and Vermont on James Woods. Its definitely a carry out place…the place is more of a pupusa factory where you order to take home/for a party/ etc/

The market is a little adventure - many places get ripe(score), and sometimes too ripe(loose) produce from others. If you are able to find good ripe things, you can score a great bargain that you cant get any other place - recently fresh blueberries could be had for 33¢ a box - ones that would have cost $4 at whole foods - and they were great. other times Ive gotten avocados that seemed ok, but were over-ripe, so even at 33¢ - a 33¢ loss.

what’s for 35 cent (on the photo)???

^^
Its 35 cents per once…after you serve yourself yogurt with toppings, they weight it.

This is the same concept as Yogurtland, which has a location over in Little Tokyo.

I tried this place and it was fine, but I like Yogurtland better. It’s cleaner and they have a better variety of flavors and toppings. If I’m going to make a special trip to get a yogurt, I would go over to Yogurtland. If I was already at GCM and having a lunch (love the greasy Chinese food at China Cafe) I wouldn’t mind going over here to get a small yogurt for a light dessert.
