little tokyo project gets a name change, opening soon
This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.
Related Cos., the developer of several Downtown-area projects including Little Tokyo’s Hikari Apartments and the Grand Avenue Project on Bunker Hill, have rebranded the under-construction San Pedro Apartments as Sakura Crossing.
Sitting mid-block on San Pedro Street between 2nd and 3rd streets, the six-story apartment building will bring 230 units of housing to the area, with a 20% affordable housing set-aside.
A residential mini-neighborhood will eventually spring up from the large surface parking lot where a mid-block paseo was constructed last year to connect three additional new developments and ground-floor retail. Sakura Crossing is set to open in the spring.

Atleast there are still some projects getting done.
I wish the project had been designed with context to its neighborhood, Little Tokyo. As it stands now, the building is completely generic, which is unfortunate. This re-branding effort at this point in the project simply seems an afterthought.
Yeah, I agree with David Kennedy. Sakura Crossing’s really bland looking. Avalon Matsu, on the other hand, looks pretty good (or at least I think so).
Do you guys think people will move into this complex? It seems like there are so many vacancies in the area. I live in Savoy and the Artisan behind us seems like it is so empty, even though they’ve been open for some time now. Also, will this place be for sale or lease? And I remember reading something about retail spaces on the bottom floor, is that still part of the plan?
And completely off topic…does anyone know what is going on with the building off of the 110 fwy right near the 101/5? I drive by it at night and the building looks completely empty. Quite sad if you ask me.
Steve - vacant units is JUST AS sad as unrealistic asking prices/rents and for the exact same reason
Also, will this place be for sale or lease?
I don’t want to get snarky and say something about a person’s basic reading comprehension skills, but isn’t the word “apartments” — not to mention “apartment” too — a good enough clue about the nature of this development?
Douglas,
Thanks for your snarky remarks. Sorry my reading comprehension isn’t as sharp as yours. I can only hope to one day be at your level.
Before Doug and Steve get more “snarky” at each other (i’m kidding guys), just a bit of good news. Hikari is fully occupied so there is hope for these other buildings (as long as they aren’t asking for rediculous rents).
So they are naming it Sakura Crossing which means Cherry Blossom Crossing. Are they going to plant Sakura trees?
They should since it’s little Tokyo.
FYI……Artisan On 2nd is not empty. I live here and they are just about full, plus these apt’s were built with Condo qualities so you are definitely getting a better product verses an apt. at APARTMENT PRICE’S! I think that it’s great that there’s a new addition to Little Tokyo, we need it but I agree that the asthetic could have been better….maybe they’re not done?
