downtown johnny rockets coming to hikari
This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.
I was at the brand-new Robeks Juice Little Tokyo (at Hikari Apartments, 2nd/Central) trying to get some info on when ‘gina will open. The woman working behind the counter had no information on when it’s due to open (it looks to be a few weeks out at least), but she did mention that the owner of the Robeks franchise is opening a Johnny Rockets location right next door.
A Downtown Los Angeles location is listed as “Coming Soon” on its website; it appears we’ve found the mystery location, though this does seem to conflict with earlier reports by Curbed in June about Johnny Rockets opening at 445 South Figueroa Street, and it is still officially unconfirmed by anyone actually involved in the project.
The space Johnny Rockets is supposed to be building out is a relatively small space, though it compares in size to the Hollywood/Highland location. The space is between ‘gina and Robeks, and there is construction going on inside, though it’s still too early to tell if it’s going to take the shape of a Johnny Rockets.
It seems a better location would be the empty retail space on 2nd Street, as it’s a bit larger and has more foot traffic. I guess we’ll see as time goes on.
UPDATE: Someone in the know states that this will be a Johnny Rockets Express, which offers the same food but no seating. Makes sense since it’s such a small location.

A Johnny Rockets Express, huh? I’ve seen one of those, well maybe somewhere in the foodcourt of an aiport. I’m excited for the new restaurant option in Little Tokyo, I’m just curious how this location model is going to work there. I could understand an express location in the Financial District were you have quick in-n-ount lunchers, but LT doesn’t strike me as that kind of neighborhood. Either way, glad to see one less For Lease sign on the streets.
I am also glad that we are getting rid of another “for lease sign” as well. Based on my research, the another empty store across from the Johny R is going to be occupied by YogurtLand. I have been to their OC location and they serve fro yo that makes sense. Really cheap and their yorgurt actually tasts good. Can’t remember exactly, but they’ve got ridiculously many flavors and toppings… and it’s self serve. I am a fro yo adict and don’t mind another fro yo in LT if they will serve good fro yo cheap~
