Last week I discussed the upcoming parking structure and retail at 8th and Hope coming in the fall of 2009. That may be a year and a half away, but Downtown residents have much to be excited about in South Park during the upcoming months.
Rivera, the “modern Latin” restaurant from Chef John Rivera Sedlar, hopes to open at the Met Lofts on November 1. Sangria, margaritas, mojitos, oh my!
Nearby, the second location of the popular Culver City wine-bar Bottle Rock is scheduled to open in late July -- but judging by the state of construction, that's not going to happen. It'll have some neighborhood competition once a second South Park wine bar (currently in negotiations) sets up shop just a block away.
The next phase of LA Live -- including the Grammy Museum, Club Nokia, bowling alley and restaurants -- is on pace for a December 1 opening. The Farm of Beverly Hills, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse, Katsuya, Rosa Mexicano and Yard House are among the confirmed tenants.
Nothing official has been heard out of Luma's upcoming Danish restaurant/bakery Hygge, but the newest word on the street says owner Ray Lee has assembled a core team for launch, and now plans to coincide his debut with the restaurants of LA Live.
On the fast food front, Pastagina (this one to serve gelato!) and Quiznos will arrive this summer inside the Market Lofts, followed by another Johnny Rockets location inside the AT&T Center, making a total of three for Downtown.
On Olympic Boulevard, Fashion Cafe is filling a portion of the old Museum of Neon Art space [ed.: fixed] inside the Renaissance Apartments. A new storefront sign posted this week makes the announcement (credit goes to angelenic editor Ira Lu). Also, a German-themed restaurant from couple Eugenia Chung and Klaus Schmidt will transform the old Discount Tire Centers structure just blocks away.
Across the street from Ralphs, Panini Cafe is already lighting up and is on pace to open by the end of June.
Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles is looking to expand with five new locations, including one Downtown, according to Eater LA. They are looking for “free standing buildings with parking lots and full liquor licenses in mid-to-high income neighborhoods.” South Park is a likely candidate to fit that criteria.
Finally, let’s not forget Polynesian-themed Trader Vic’s is scouting the neighborhood, as stated in an April press release from the company.
Phew… anything missing here?

please let Roscoe’s be in South Park…now there’s a foodie place!
is Fashion Cafe next to Maui Wowie also being built at the Renaissance Tower ?
Yes, Fashion Cafe is right next to Maui Wowi, but I’ll actually be writing about that opening next week (also, it’s not technically a restaurant).
Rivera is putting bottle rock to shame. I think bottle rock had like an 8 month head start, and Rivera is WAY ahead. Anyhow, I think Rivera opens in December, and Bottle Rock opens Spring 09.
Hygee probably finishes in summer 09, and Kor group never actually sees their restaurant completed in the near future.
has their been any plywood on the german resto?
I’m looking into that one, Jeremy. I’ll have more information for you over the next day or two.
I ate at Maria’s dt kitchen last night. Great Food!!!!
We need Roscoe’s in South Park real bad. Also, Bottlerock is really dropping the ball here…they’ve had that Coming Soon sign up since early 2007. What the heck?
I love the look of Panini Cafe and think the outdoor seating really takes the neighborhood to a whole new level. Bottlerock reportedly hit a construction snag a few weeks back- something to do with the kitchen ventilation I think- but I’ve seen construction people continuing to work inside as of late.
I’m still looking for an L&L!
Fashion Cafe is kind of tourist-y isn’t it? I think they had one of those in New Orleans (or maybe I am mistaking it for something else).
L & L? Do you mean the Hawaiian BBQ joint? Also, not to be overly picky, but isn’t it “The Museum of Neon Art”? I feel like they use the acronym MONA at times..
Fixed, Nico. Thanks!
When’s Trader Vic’s coming? Can’t wait for that!!
I suggest in a nice rehab building like the Roosevelt, or the Fine Arts.
Yes, I was referring to L&L Hawaiian BBQ. Right now the closest L&L is the Glendale, Pasadena, Carson or the Hawthorne locations. It’s like a big deal to get to go these days what with not having a car. We usually go when we do the monthly errand (car rental) run.
Aloha Cafe is ok for the ribs (IMHO) but not much else. It’s just not the same as L&L. ;)
The Museum of Neon Art moved last year. They are now on 4th Street between Main and Spring.
meeko - take the metro to pasadena, exit the del mar station and you’re steps away from L&L. and steps away from that new cupcake place, too.
Dot’s cupcakes! I love it!! Houston’s Restaurant is also nearby. That’s a great area.
the hawaiian place in the food court near 9th and los angeles in the fashion district is in the same league as l&l, in my opinion.
Celia! thank you!!! whoo hoo! and Jim.. haven’t been over to 9th & LA before so will have to check that out too! thank bunches you guys!! (no more whining from me.. )
