Biddy Mason Park, a quiet respite between Broadway and Spring near the Bradbury Building, has been receiving some serious attention from local business owners eager to bring members of the community to the oft-overlooked space. A unique water sculpture lies in the center of the courtyard.

The owners of Hoagies & Wings as well as events producer Marc Joseph have spearheaded a live music and events schedule that’s bound to put the park on your map.

A special gallery has been set up to take advantage of this evening’s Art Walk (showing at 4:00pm through the end of the day), while live jazz begins at 6:30pm. Outdoor sales of beer and wine have been approved! Who wouldn’t want to enjoy a couple beers while listening to good jazz on a summer evening?

Friday’s R&B Showcase features the Back in Time Quartet, who will be singing a range of songs from before 1990 (7:00-9:00pm).

And finally, on the June 18th the park will be home to Marc Joseph’s second Town Square, a follow-up to the successful business networking event that was last held at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel.

While all these events are great for business, the real goal is to bring attention to the history of Biddy Mason, who died in 1891. She was the first Black American female landowner in Los Angeles and was a well-known altruist, making childcare and midwife services affordable for hundreds. A memorial to her achievements is located in the breezeway of the park.
