Bark Avenue Storefront, Downtown Los AngelesBark Avenue, a full-service dog and cat boarding facility, is aiming for a mid-July opening, according to owner Jay Blumberg.

At first glance, the new location — across Main Street — would seem to encroach on Pussy & Pooch’s retail turf. But as the owners of the two businesses explained as they stood side-by-side last week, the two concepts are complementary.

Bark Avenue will offer full-service pet care at their new Historic Core facility, from grooming to doggy day care and boarding, while Pussy & Pooch’s storefront is packed with pet supplies.

BearOn another note, pets are often overlooked in their supporting role in the revitalization of Downtown LA. Since most adaptive reuse buildings in Downtown have concrete floors, they’re a natural fit for those with dogs (and the occasional rabbit in a stroller).

Getting people out onto the streets of Downtown may otherwise have been an enormous task without a little furry friend begging to go out at all hours of the day and night. Now retail services are starting to play catch-up with the pet demographic.

What an awesome looking dog :-) I’m a softie for pooches….just wish I had the time for one. Especially since I’m practically next door to Bark Ave and Pussy&Pooch.

Side note: did anyone else notice the signage on Pussy & Pooch changed temporarily last week? Or did I dream that?

The signage change was for … wait for it… a film shoot.

aaah…duh. I just remember seeing it briefly as I was rushing somewhere, and I stored it away in the back of my brain to figure out later. But when I saw the sign back to normal, I was seriously wondering if maybe I knocked back too much hooch that day. Thanks for clarifying, Rich.

“…rabbit in a stroller…”

I just saw that a few days ago at 5th and Broadway- did a huge double-take and wished I had my camera. Is that guy a regular around downtown? It certainly was an attention grabber, but if my dog was along, it could have been real interesting if we came up from behind thinking it was an infant (which Isis loves) and then saw the floppy ears.

yep, the man with bunny in tow is a regular around downtown and has been into P&P more than once looking to buy it a collar and a sweater back in January I believe… we’ll be posting that photo sometime soon on the P&P blog (yet to be launched). we also have reports of not 1, but 2 potbellied pigs also living in the Historic Core… I’m just waiting for them to stop on for a Bathhouse wash ;-)…
in case you are wondering… we reasoned with the man that the bunny would not care for a collar or a sweater… we are quite practical after all, but do LUV the diversity.

What are they going to do with all of the black people hanging around in that spot? It’s dirty and littered…
