This month, Downtown really is the center of it all.
Los Angeles Magazine has dedicated a chunk of its July 2008 issue to our city’s once-again “booming center” — profiling the best neighborhood haunts, catching up with bar mogul Cedd Moses, and sharing lifestyle tips from residents.
I was asked by Associate Editor Lesley Bargar to pair off in a blogger chat with pal Shannon Simonds (of sha in LA) to discuss our favorite local spots, hitting on places to eat, shop, live and hangout. The result is a three-page rundown of all the things we know and love about our little corner of the city (see Section 4 of Downtown 2.0 in the issue).
Many “with it” angelenic readers won’t find much ground-breaking news in the feature, which spans over 20 pages in five sections — but most people will have to concede: Downtown looks damn good on paper.
Whether you still prefer the manicured streetscapes of the Westside or the quiet cul-de-sacs of the Valley, it’s difficult to deny the progress Los Angeles is making to grow its urban appeal. Thanks to Los Angeles Magazine for casting the spotlight for all to see!

thanks! I’ve still yet to “see it” in real life. looks good scanned though!
How very cool — congratulations on getting some well-deserved recognition!
yeah there wasn’t anything in the magazine that you hadn’t already touched on but it was very exciting and your article was the most informative of the five by far!
Nice work.
Nice to see you are being recognized for your work.
Bout time Downtown got a big spread in LA mag, so glad Angelenic had a part. Congrats
While I’m not 100% certain, I’m pretty sure a “downtown” issue is annual (or at least near it) for LA Mag. I have a couple issues, going back about 6 years, that were downtown focused.
I’m just confused that I haven’t seen anyone bring up in the blogs (this or others), that the cover is a photoshop production! Aside from the angle of the curved window facade as being a giveaway, there is no glass/curved/tall building in that are of City West- looking toward the Wedbush and Fig Tower buildings! Downtown is cool, and doesn’t need an LA-style plastic surgery image to make it seem so! (although it may need such an image to make it “LA”)
Yeah, the angled glass is Cal Plaza while the shot of the buildings behind it are taken from what appears to be City West. I consider it to be more of a collage of Downtown than a “realistic” image of what Downtown looks like.
Stephen enjoyed the piece, it was casual, informative and entertaining:)
