Panini Cafe, Downtown Los AngelesPanini Cafe Patio

Possibly the most universally appealing restaurant in the works for Downtown, Italian and Mediterranean eatery Panini Cafe — sitting complete at the corner of 9th and Hope in South Park — is awaiting final approvals for its grand opening next week.

According to Director of Operations Ali Kazemi, doors are confirmed to open by Wednesday, if not earlier (call ahead). Finishing touches will be applied to the dining room and bar area over the weekend, bringing to life the comfortable space sure to bring in casual diners all hours of the day.

Aside from a lengthy variety of grilled Italian sandwiches, Panini Cafe will serve classic breakfast items daily from 7:00am, and an extensive lunch and dinner menu until 10:00pm. Espresso beverages, wine and Bloody Marys will be available around the clock.

Kazemi explains that two people can easily dine for under $25, and portion sizes are said to be generous.

The director goes on to discuss the company’s planned expansion throughout Southern California.

In addition to the new Downtown location, Panini Cafe will begin serving the Aliso Viejo, Hollywood and Brentwood markets later this year. Restaurants for Glendale and Santa Monica are also being negotiated as part of a strategic corporate plan to take the company public — a strong indicator of the regional chain’s growing success.

Spotting the local demand for more affordable eating options, and making an early move to act on that opportunity, Panini Cafe will certainly continue that success here.

nice! a new option for Southpark…as our district continues to fill in, Southpark will be the “westside of downtown”…a new neighborhood. This is in the Skyline condo bldg next to Ralphs and FIDM.

I noticed this place looked almost ready to open last night.

I will be most interested to see how much business they get for breakfast and dinner, particularly on the weekends. Breakfast in downtown on the weekends is packed. Lunch should be a no brainer, particularly during the week. Yet, I’m curious how the weekends will be for lunch. Basically, how much of the Ralph’s foot traffic translates into business. I’m optimistic (assuming the food is any good) this is the beginning of a true blooming of this block.

Yeah, I’m glad Panini will be siphoning some of that Ralphs traffic. That block should be a cool little area once all the business open up and 717 Ninth and Concerto are finished.

Very nice.

Glad to see that it will be open every day from 7AM to 10PM!

it’s not just the ralph’s traffic they could potentially siphon off - if there’s a long-ass line at the pantry, one could be convinced to walk a couple blocks here.

i’m so glad to see panini move into that space. when i first moved to downtown los angeles in 1991, it was to the skyline.

I remember the last business to try to occupy that space. They tried to open a deli and market and it was a complete flop. The deli served expensive meat laden sandwiches that did nothing to attract business from the hundreds of weight conscious FIDM students that walked by the corner everyday. Even worse, the owner closed the market at 6:00 p.m. denying himself the clients like myself who lived in the Skyline but did not return from work before his closing time. I swear that market/deli went out of business in less than three months. Here’s wishing much better luck to the new owners!

I went by it yesterday and it looks good, really great how they made use of the space. An improvement to that corner really, love the outdoor seating area- very inviting.

fyi, not to take focus off of panini, however, Rivera restaurant @ Met Lofts continues build out…current expected date is to open is Nov. 1…Bottlerock ran into a snag with the city but got a variance so they should be moving forward again…watch for concrete flooring pour soon…fingers crossed! what’s the status of Hygge?

Nathan, Hygge should receive its construction permits in the middle of July, and build-out should begin shortly thereafter.

I like how they made use of that space too, it looks soo high-quality!!Hopefully this ignites more retail/development down 9th all the way to Bway!

I passed by this place a couple of weeks ago on my way to Ralph’s. It’s a few block from where I work, so I will definitely have to check it out on my lunch break sometime soon.
