weeneez for brunch?
Looking for an affordable Sunday brunch in Downtown LA? Weeneez, the Historic Core hot dog eatery, will start offering brunch fare Sunday, July 13 [ed: Date fixed].
For all you skeptics who think that brunch and hot dogs don’t mix, don’t worry: The brunch menu is full of traditional options. In fact, the only thing that resembles a hot dog on the menu is the Vienna sausage omelette — though it is highly recommended by owner Julie Rico.
While I may stick with banana pancakes, French toast, or biscuits & homemade gravy, it will be great to have a close-to-home solution for an affordable brunch — but I’ll be paying special attention to their mimosas.

Hi All,
Please check the date. Its going to be July 13, 2008 not the 17th.
Thank you for supporting the coolest hot dog restaurant in the world!
Fixed. Thanks, Julie! I was using the date shown on the digital menu which says July 17.
Thanks for getting this info out there, Rich and Julie; I predict July 13th will be a very busy day for Weeneez…
Hot dog! Weeneez brunch menu is fabulous. Seriously. And it’s a great starting point for a stroll through the art galleries. Love it!!
Another one bites the dust…dag. I went to Weeneez for my Sunday morning Ham&Eggs, the Sunday paper in my hands when I found the sign proclaiming Brunch now served had crossed out the Sunday hours. No eggs, no dogs, no body. Once again, your long standing advice to call ahead should have been heeded. Instead, I spent my breakfast money with the good folks at “Roast to Go” at Grand Central Market. “Dos tacos de carnitas, por favor”.
I find this interesting. The more mainstream places like Denny’s, The Pantry and IHOP are packed for Sunday brunch. Possibly, the breakfast menu wasn’t that enticing. Then again, the name of the place doesn’t really evoke breakfast. I wonder what their marketing plan was? Although, after two months, I’m not sure they gave it time to build the business. Regardless, ‘tis disappointing.
Folks have to remember the eastern half of the central city, most specifically the streets that are surrounded by old, wall-to-wall buildings that once housed accountants, lawyers and bankers — before the car became king in LA — and therefore have never been associated with plentiful (and especially free or clearly visible) public parking and residential-friendly, shopper-friendly activity, is at a disadvantage when it comes to little shops like weeneez.
Even worse is that part of the city still is seen by many people as being too close to Skid Row and other various depressing, even dangerous, things.
The only remedy to this is adding a lot more new housing and accompanying residents to the area, and making parking as convenient and accessible as possible. And, no, LA still isn’t a city that caters to the needs of the users of sidewalks more than the users of cars. So the notion that it’s bad policy to accomodate automobiles and drivers with lots of new parking—and that businesses like weenez will thrive even if they’re forced to rely mainly on customers walking from blocks away—-is way too idealistic.
^ See the business success of Rocket Pizza, Pete’s Cafe, Warung Cafe, Bar 107, the Edison, etc… so parking is not really the issue. It’s there. I’m sorry, in large cities, you pay for parking. We’re not Orange County or Pheonix were huge parking lots are abundant, and plentiful.
Anyways..honestly, a hot dog for brunch? That’s not a great concept. It didn’t sound like it was going to work out, unfortunately.
“LA still isn’t a city that caters to the needs of the users of sidewalks more than the users of cars.”
I disagree. Downtown is exactly the kind of place that works better by appealing to the sidewalk, not to the car. If people want free and easy parking they would rarely do downtown at all. To make downtown car friendly would be to destroy it.
There are enough people living within a few blocks to keep all these places busy. According to the owner of Weeneez, they are doing great for the Saturday brunch. Give them time, they will likely reopen on Sundays.
Hey everyone,
We changed the menu up a bit. Lowered the prices big time. Added an amazing $2.99 special and took out Sunday for the short term. We are a small business. Its like a small sail boat. If there is no wind, well, you have to hoist the sails in a different direction and go with the flow. Thus closing on Sunday. We had 3 people for the previous last Sunday and well that aint enough people to sustain 5 employees and the food I have to purchase for the breakfast. I can absorb that cost into my Saturday as we are open anyway. The $2.99 breakfast is a hit already and yea this is going to work. Once Saturday builds up. We will be fine to open for Sunday. Whoo HOO for the $2.99 breakfast!
Hey Julie. What do you get with the $2.99 breakfast special?
I can vouch that the breakfast special is an amazing value. $2.99 gets you two eggs and two sausage patties/bacon/turkey sausage…
I’ll be there often!
