sugacane lounge fills in hill street restaurant space

This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.

SugaCane Lounge, Downtown Los AngelesBack in February, I commented on the advancement of new retail and restaurants in the eastern South Park area, which has benefited from an influx of residents in new buildings such as Luma, Elleven, and Met Lofts.

Continuing that trend is SugaCane Lounge, which had a soft opening June 30 at 1053 South Hill Street. The space formerly housed La Adelita Mexican Restaurant.

Described as authentic Caribbean food by owner Smitty, eats include Jamaican staples such as jerk chicken, oxtail, and curry goat. Check the full menu for more info.

Are we finally getting an alternative to Cha Cha Cha in Silver Lake?

UPDATE: Off-menu vegetarian items are available and will be added to the main menu soon. Ask for mac & cheese or jerk tofu.

there’s not a single veg option here besides the salad — what’s that about?

Sarah, I am going to forward this post to the owner once we get a few comments on it. I’m sure there a lot of people that would like veggie options — so any suggestions would be welcome.

At least they have salmon and shrimp - but seriously, vegetarian options are so important.

I love how this place just sprung up unnoticed. Best of luck to SugaCane Lounge!

Thanks, Rich! When I lived in Brooklyn, the Carribean restaurants there always had killer mac and cheese. Not the healthiest option, but still, an option. :)

sorry, i mean Caribbean.

Awesome. Another ethnic restaurant.

Some comments (Or things I personally would like)
Add 2-3 veggies options, but keep the menu small and manageable. Focus on keeping costs and down and food quality instead of a bloated, expensive, unimpressive menu.

Just got back from lunch there. I talked with the owner, and I’d like to clear a couple things up: There are vegetarian options (Mac and cheese, jerk tofu and others) that aren’t on the menu yet but should be soon.

Late hours are coming soon, and they will be open tonight for dinner late to accommodate patrons of the Mayan.

Oh, and by the way, the food was awesome — large plates and the jerk chicken is just the right heat level for me (I tend to like things spicy).

Ah, yes, another reason to go to The Mayan! I hope to read a report on late-night dining at some point.

I’m glad to see a different type of restaurant springing up in downtown. Cha Cha Cha’s does an excellent job of providing vegetarian options, its important for restaurants to realize vegetarian doesn’t mean just salad or tofu. Caribbean food is generally pretty vegetarian friendly, but there are several ways to be more creative with the menu, which I think Cha Cha Cha’s has addressed nicely. Empanadas, tamales, veggie-meat substitutes(chicken, steak, shrimp, salmon are all available these days) on regular menu items should be taken into consideration. I think it’s fair to say the community will support and/or appreciates any out-of-the-box thinking when it comes to vegetarian options. Can’t wait to try this place out.

Just had lunch at this place. Off menu tofu plate is fantastic! Be sure to try their “spliff” sized bread as well.

Had meals there for several days the food was very good. The hours of opening must be set to a regular time,Service need to be faster,But they are still new and can work these kinks out. If you are truly ready for real food check out the Sugacane the family there is awesome.Stop by and buy a patty or two as finger food on the go.

In response to the no vegie option…I believe the menu states steamed vegies with all entrees….Did I read wrong?
