Conceptual renderings for the Civic Center’s new pocket park at 2nd and Main, provided by Curbed LA, show one layout as envisioned by a UCLA design team.
The one-acre green space is part of the LAPD’s new headquarters facility under construction on the block between the LA Times Building and Eli Broad Plaza.
According to Eva Kandarpa of Jan Perry’s Office, residents should be enjoying this public space by Spring 2009, though proposals are still being requested for the site.
Regardless of the ultimate configuration of landscaping, seating and lawn space, a restaurant and public auditorium (the sharp triangular structure show above) are integral parts of the project — set to span the north side of 2nd Street between Spring and Main.
No tenant for the restaurant space has been selected, but everything from a fast food chain to local cafe are in the running.

Cool I didn’t know there’d be a restaurant there..I wondered what that building was.
The renderings look good. I like it.
And maybe since it is right next to the PD there won’t be any homeless pissing in the park.
There may not be homeless, but the lobby of Parker Center is often filled with narco, sex and arson offenders who must register with the department and be photographed as a condition of their probation or parole. I suspect that function will move to the new jail building rather than the new PAB.
I doubt the police presence is going to have any effect on homeless people in the park. The current station is one block away from the backside of the LA Mission, and if you have ever been through that street (I believe its San Julian), its plain to see that drug dealers cruise through that street and sell their “product” with no worries of being caught. I’d like to be optimistic, so hopefully things will change.
Those renderings look great, though I don’t think they can get trees that large in planters, as there’s parking directly underneath. Still, I’ll be thrilled if it turns out half as good.
Responsible Dog Owners don’t need to hear this…
Tornadoes: Unfortunately, because of the lack of dog parks, it is more likely that it will be dog “left behinds” than human “left behinds” left at the park.
This is a Police Headquarters, not a police station. It replaces Parker Center, not Central Station. It is largely administrative, and will house office workers mostly, making it a Civic Center-type building, like many of the others in the area.
The park is kinda small, but should be quite similar in use to City Hall Park, a block to the north.
The old Caltrans building was scheduled to all be park. The State was backstabed by the city.
