Union Lofts Signage, Downtown Los AngelesAfter heading back to more populated environs from dinner at Wood Spoon last night, angelenic stumbled upon an eerie sight: The blade sign that boldly proclaims “WHOLESALE MART” at the almost-completed Union Lofts in Downtown LA’s Jewelry District was being scraped clean, presumably for a new sign letting the world know one can now find lofts here.

It was a bit late in the evening, there weren’t many people were walking around, and the painted letters were falling off in chunks onto the sidewalk below. It marked the symbolic close of one chapter of the building’s history and the beginning of another.

The building, originally designed by Curlett & Beelman in 1928 — the firm also designed the Roosevelt Building — is currently undergoing conversion by Meruelo Maddux; adaptive reuse designs were handled by Killefer Flammang. It served as the headquarters of Union Bank & Trust, and the building eventually fell into disrepair and served as part of the Hill Fashion Center along with the adjacent building to the north.

Included in the conversion plans are 92 loft apartments ranging from 700 to 1,900 square feet and ground-floor retail, including a 6,000 square-foot upscale American restaurant and 5,000 square-foot lounge. The building directly to the north remains retail/commercial and is not included in conversion plans.

Union Lofts is located at 760 South Hill Street in Downtown Los Angeles, at the northeast corner of 8th and Hill.
