Downtown Los Angeles Skyline at Night

as summer heats up, so do downtown’s outdoor concert series

Pershing SquareThe temperature’s rising, and Pershing Square will come alive once again this summer with free music, dancing, art and kids’ events leading the way.

June 3 marks the kickoff of the Summer Concert Series, which runs from 12:00 noon to 2:00pm every Tuesday and Thursday through the end of August. Local talent has been handpicked by park staff, and even though Pershing Square may need some work, its shortcomings are quickly set aside for these lunchtime shows.

Starting June 15, the third Sunday of every month is Salsa Sundays — at least from 4:00 to 6:00pm. Pros showing off their moves and beginners learning the ropes of the famed dance are all welcome.

If that isn’t enough to bring you to Pershing Square, this year’s Meet Your Neighbors event is Saturday and Sunday, June 7-8, 12:00 noon to 5:00pm. Turnout last year was pretty sparse — but we hope to be able to meet you this time!

Summer nighttime events had to be scaled back because of the mayor’s recent budget cuts, but you can still manage to check out the Gin Blossoms and others for Wednesday Night’s Downtown Stage events. Concerts begin July 30, from 8:00 to 10:00pm, and run through the end of August.

Kids’ events and outdoor showings of films about Downtown will take place later in the summer. Check the schedule for more info.

Never one to be outdone, Grand Performances has released their 2008 summer schedule. The free events held in the Water Court at Cal Plaza expose Downtowners and others to a variety of world music, performance art and film, and is widely credited with bringing many to Downtown who would otherwise never have a reason to come here.

The series starts June 1 at 8:00pm. Check out Grand Performances for the full schedule.

you know what would be really cool? If the city had an outdoor summer film series like they do in bryant park in nyc.
