classic films, historic theatres… hurry, last seats remaining!
Three of Broadway’s most beautiful movie palaces have recently polished up their prosceniums to relive the glory days, and starting May 28, Downtowners should pull out the top hats and gowns to match the occasion.
The Los Angeles Conservancy’s 22nd Annual Last Remaining Seats program debuts in two weeks and runs through July 2, but if you haven’t taken the time to purchase your tickets, do it now because there are truly only a few seats remaining for the final two evenings.
Mexican comedy El Rey Del Barrio at the Million Dollar Theatre June 25, and a trifecta of silent film classics July 2 at the Orpheum Theatre are your last two options for a classy night out on the town.
Each of these screenings are accompanied by live entertainment (including a performance on the Orpheum’s mighty Wurlitzer organ), an experience sure to whisk you back decades to time when Vaudeville ruled the stage. Unfortunately, it only happens once a year.
Recorded Ticket Information, call 213-430-4219.

$15 for Conservancy members (limit 4)

I believe the Downtown News pointed it out earlier this year. But, given how quickly this event sells out every year, it does suggest the event could easily be enlarged to handle the clear demand. But, it also suggests that, properly marketed, these venues could be more active year round. Not just one or two nights a year.
I also liked how the programming this year included ‘Goldfinger’. Historically, the event has shown mostly very old films. However, I know there’s a lot of more recent films which I’d love to see on the big screen. I bet I’m not alone.
For those that have never attended the Last Remaining Seats screenings, you’re missing out on a great evening of cinema and history. The theaters are filled with folks who appreciate film, art, architecture and the efforts of the LA Conservancy. Check it out.
For those of us who grew up attending movies in the Broadway theaters it’s an even more fabulous evening of nostaglia and contributing to the magnificent historical jewels that grace Broadway.
It’s one aspect of downtown Los Angeles that is uniquely “angelenic”.
See you there.
David, you are so right on the money! The theaters are poised to have year round programming and I think it’s just a matter of time before that becomes a reality. Newer movies, premieres, film festivals, indies…classics, it’s all possible.
My wish list would include:
1) The Road Warrior
Star Wars trilogy (original series only!)
2) Blade Runner (director’s cut)
3) Harold & Maude
4) Saving Private Ryan
5) Sands of Iwo Jima
6) Rocky (never seen it on the big screen)
7) Lord of the Rings trilogy (missed the last one)
9) Terminator 2
10) The Matrix
11) Serenity
12) Man on Fire
13) Casablanca
14) Cars (for my boys)
15) The Little Mermaid (for my daughter)
16) 101 Dalmatians (for my kids)
17) Batman Begins
18) Bad Lieutenant
You get the idea.
Isn’t there some guy putting together some film festival downtown?
I was lucky enough to catch movies at the following theaters from 1994-98
the orpheum, the olympic, the state, the palace and also a vicente fernandez concert at the million dollar as a kid with my parents in the 80’s.
