flower power overtakes the historic core (and other retail news)
The Historic Core is abuzz with a few new retail establishments coming online over the next few days and weeks.
Move over, Flower District! Two new independent flower shops are taking root in the Historic Core: a flower and gifts retailer opening in the SB Lofts (6th and Spring) and a high-end florist planned in the ground-floor of the Old Bank District parking structure on Main Street.
Also in the SB Lofts, a new ink and toner retailer is setting up shop to serve the local office market. The business is on the Spring Street side of the building.
Up the street, Falafel Express has taken over the former Spring Street Cafe at 433 S Spring Street. This appears to be an offshoot of the Tarzana Falafel Express (Glatt Kosher) which got a generally favorable review from LA Taco. Signage for the new the restaurant was being installed this weekend and plans are to open within a month, according to the owners.
See anything opening soon that we haven’t covered yet? Let us know!

there are a couple of other spaces in the sb lofts building that look like they may be getting built out, because their windows have recently been covered over. it’s the two spaces on 6th street side near the alley.
Hey Jim -
I saw that recently. We’re keeping an eye on it.
I hope the Falafel guys realize that they are located right in the middle of a permanent film set.
Falafel Express joins a growing number of Kosher establishments downtown.
One of the first was Afshan Persian food (meat, 9th street) , Kosher-Bar-B-Q Israeli/North African (meat, 9th street) opened last year, Hill Street Pizza (dairy, Hill and 5th) also opened last year, and a Kosher Market (Santee btwn 8th & 9th).So to Falafel Express Mazel Tov.
Anybody know anything about 43 Styles closing down?
yeah, 43 styles closed down.

the ink & toner place just packed up and left this weekend. how much longer will the flower shop hang on?
Jim: I don’t know, but now that the gallery is offering airbrush tattoos… I’m going with that whole Spring Street side packing up soon.
After 43 Styles shuttered, the clothing store on 6th isn’t going to last much longer, IMO.
Looks like Salon on 6 is going to be the sole tenant for a while.
Barry Shy just picked up a new retail leasing group to handle all their buildings. Maybe we’ll see some movement now.
that new burger bar restaurant is in that same neiborhood, says “Coming Soon” I would like to see more of that syle advertisment downtown, very cool!
