indian restaurant planned for old bank district
These days, the blocks of “Gilville” offer it all: a mix of great eateries, trendy boutiques, a coffee shop, hair salon, mini market, art galleries, even shiny new neon museum.
And by this time next year, the neighborhood, still under the tight reign of developer Tom Gilmore, may have something you can’t find anywhere else in Downtown - decent Indian cuisine.
Shaily, the newest dining project in the works by Gilmore & Associates, is being described as “Cal-Indian,” an L.A.-original term coined for experimental takes on traditional dishes.
Downtowners might look to East India Grill in Hollywood or Bombay Palace in Beverly Hills for what to expect from Shaily, which is reportedly planned for the Hellman Building Annex storefront on Spring Street next to the El Dorado Lofts.
Sound familiar? That’s right, it’s the same 2,200 square-foot space Sushi on Spring was supposed to go before it was leased back in January to artist Miguel Osuna as a work studio.
Osuna’s lease guarantees him occupancy until the beginning of 2009, so don’t expect a restaurant here anytime soon. In the end though, whether we get a place to buy sashimi, tandoori or Mexican oil paintings, this spot is destined for some ethnic flavor.

I would be SO excited to have an indian restaurant here. No more making my own via Trader Joes!
Until then, Makkah on Vermont is the best option. The food is legit and they deliver downtown ‘til about 10:30PM: http://besthalaltandoori.com/
What about the Indian food place at the Stillwater?
^ Gill’s at the Stillwell. It’s really good, though way too spicy.
Gil’s is average and they are kind of unfriendly there. It’s good for a quick fix when you just need some Indian food but that hotel is scanky.
YES! More food options, please!
For my quick Indian fix, I go to Saffron India in the underground food court of the City National Plaza.
The food is excellent and the staff is very friendly. They are pretty new in Downtown and quite unique in their concept. They do lunch and dinner til 9pm, as well as deliveries to surrounding areas.
