johnny rockets ready for lift off
Everyone, start your low-carb diets. The countdown has begun. Johnny Rockets at Union Bank Plaza is getting ready for lift off.
Eager diners can start lining up for hot, juicy burgers, chili fries, malted shakes and good, old-fashioned apple pie (with or without cheese) next week. Manager David told me Johnny Rockets will be open for business “probably Tuesday or Wednesday.”
Although I wasn’t allowed to take pictures inside the restaurant, I could see all the furniture and equipment were installed and workers were adding finishing touches to the joint and scrubbing everything down to a sparkling finish. A staff training session was visibly in progress when I stopped by Saturday morning.
Johnny Rockets is located at the northwest corner of 5th and Figueroa, on the second floor of the Union Bank Plaza next to Robek’s.
They will be open for breakfast with hours of operation from 7:00am to 8:00pm Monday through Friday. They will also be open Saturday (hours not yet determined) and closed Sundays.
Are your stomachs growling yet?

They sure weren’t open yesterday! I waited and waited outside to no avail. Hope they are open today. I am fixing for a strawberry milkshake like you woulnd’t believe!
I don’t know for sure if they are open today but I did see guys in pressed whites and pointy hats out front this morning at 7:00 a.m. when I went by.
they did try to lift off - but they weren’t ready
Went there for lunch today after being turned away on Wednesday. Overall I was extremely disappointed. It is counter service and you go and pick up your food, even though there were only two other tables occupied. Also, we drove and parked in the underground lot right there and while the sign may say that restaurant validation is $5, only Ciudad actually validates, so our lunch cost about $10 a person then $11 for parking. The basically laughed at us when we asked about validation. Needless to say I am not going back anytime soon. Fat Burger FTW
I was able to visit this afternoon and I was not at all disappointed as it was exactly as I expected….a brand new restaurant still intent on training its employees and working the kinks out. The manager was drilling the employees on the fastidious cleanliness for which the chain is known and queried the customers about their meals as well bidding them to return again soon. The quality of the food was good if a little expensive though not out of the ballpark for similar downtown eateries. Luckily, I only live four blocks away so I could easily walk and paying to park was not a concern. Though it will not replace the Hat as my favorite double cheeseburger/fries/coke destination in the greater Los Angeles area, I believe JR’s will be a welcome addition to the downtown restaurant scene, especially as they are open on Saturday, and I look forward to having lunch on their sunny terrace overlooking 5th & Flower and the Central Library in the near future.
Whoops, make that 5th & Figueroa…..but it still is a swell terrace.
