la live phase iii: progress on ballrooms, cinemas, marriott details
Now that the LA Live Hotel tower steelwork has passed the 10-story milestone, it may be difficult to spot the remainder of the phase III complex, the ballroom and Regal cinema structures, getting some framing action of their own. After a few short weeks, several levels of both are already welded in place, and when completed will extend along Olympic Boulevard to the 110 Freeway.
The multi-story, 84,000 square-foot ballroom and amenities extension of the hotel (linked by pedestrian bridge) will carry the tower’s stream-lined architectural character conceived by Gensler.
Though a recent depiction (via Curbed LA) of the 140,000 square-foot movie theater with 14 screens — said to become the chain’s West coast flagship — illustrates a design more suited for a shopping mall in Miami Beach. (Those pastels cannot be serious.)
Scheduled to open in March 2010, the JW Marriott will be situated between floors four and twenty-one of the 54-story tower, with 879 guest rooms including 35 suites with varying levels of exclusivity.
Newly released renderings of the guestrooms show tasteful, contemporary finishes worthy of the building’s class. In addition to a lobby lounge and bar, a full-service restaurant will be located on the first floor and promises to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Of course, the hotel will offer all the usual guest amenities. A 7,000 square-foot full-service luxury spa is slated for the second floor, next to the 3,000 square-foot fitness center.
But that glamorous rooftoop pool seen in renderings may be misleading. Look lower, Marriott guests will have to enjoy their pool-side “skyline” views and cocktails from the hotel’s fourth floor.

I’m looking forward to the movie theater, though I wish it was an AMC instead of Regal. But we can’t always get what we want.
Once this opens, I have a feeling this will close-kill the Laemmle’s Grande 4 at the Marriott. They say it opened in 1984 in time for the LA summer Olympics. But it looks like its never been remodeled. Its dingy and dark too. I go there occasionally because of the product and not the facilities.
And now over at LA Curbed I read that the ImaginAsian Center in downtown-historic core is up for sale at $5 million.
I hope they stay open and keep it as is, even with a new owner.
Do you know what is the date for opening of the first phase of L.A. Live? I was under the impression some part of the complex was going to be open by the end of the year.
David, it’s supposed to be in October. They may make it! BTW, Nokia was Phase I, and the restaurants, etc., are part of Phase II.
Phase II with the restaurants, Club Nokia and Emmy Museum? They’re all supposed to open this Fall.
It was my understanding that the rooftop pool is to be for the ritz and residences, and the lower pool for the JW Marriott
Hugh, that’s correct. For those who haven’t studied this project in depth, the renderings don’t make that clear.
One angle you guys might want to check out for photos of this project is from the off-ramp for 9th Street. Very nice elevated perspective. For sure, a little awkward to get to. I think the results might merit the hassle. I often catch a quick glimpse as I exit the 110 North.
That’s funny you mention the Miami Beach thing, because Regal Cinema’s East Coast flagship theater in Miami Beach looks strikingly similar: http://www.cinemaitaly.com/uploads/venues/_22814000.12140800.jpg
