los angeles times: ‘from gritty to glamorous’
Possibly as a mea culpa to its nasty article last month on the Downtown market, the Los Angeles Times printed a positive look at the Industrial/Arts District in this Saturday’s California section.
“There has been much debate about how much of the downtown industrial area should be rezoned for residential purposes… Still, the industrial zone east of Downtown is booming. The area has lured several high-profile retailers from other posts downtown and in other parts of the city.”
The article paints an accurate picture of the neighborhood - the pandemonium of parrots who feed on the strange fruit from the tree on Jesse Street (details added by me) while trucks filled with produce rumble by.
There are also mentions of the “glamorous” new retailers as well as teases of three new restaurants on their way: Urth Caffe, Primo Cucina and Church & State, which street gossip says will open the second week in May.
And, yeah, that’s me in the first paragraphs.

The usual major LA Times factural error is when the article claims the city council passed the industrial preservation ploicy that prevents any new housing in the area - when the city council has consistently opposed the illegal implementation of that policy by the CRA and the Planning Department.
As a postscript, this article would be good on Stuff White People Like in the White People in the News section.
Stuff mentioned:
Gentrification, Coffee, Organic Food, Manhattan, architecture.
There was some major bashing on an la times blog based on this story http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/laland/2008/04/another-look-at.html
Whoa, dude! That LA Times discussion is out of control!! Never seen so many haters in one place in my life. They spend A LOT of time coming up with reasons to hate downtown. Crazy. But, my picture at the top of the page rules!
No city is more hated or misunderstood than Los Angeles. In all of Los Angeles, no one neighorhood is hated or overlooked more than DTLA.
LA times, city-data and other forums have the most vicious haters I have ever seen.
Even architecture blogs and independent newspapers like la-curbed and laweekly have idiotic haters.
This site is a breath of fresh air.
