mall eateries coming to broadway
We’ve all heard of Metro’s vision to turn Broadway into a “transit mall”, but I think someone got the wrong idea here.
Carl’s Jr. and Sbarro are building out new spaces on Broadway just north of 3rd adjacent to El Pollo Loco.
A block away in the Spring Broadway Center, Great Steak will be filling in the last retail space in the breezeway between Broadway and Spring. The new eatery is a franchised location of the popular Great Steak & Potato Company.
Over the last year, several new retailers have opened in this hidden arcade including First Cup Caffe, Surf City Squeeze and Samurai Sam’s Teriyaki Grill.
While these new restaurants won’t lend much to Broadway’s revitalization, at least they’ll bring additional options to the daytime lunch crowd.
Thanks to reader Dr. Boris for the tip about Carl’s Jr. and Sbarro!

On the El Pollo Loco location: In 1995 that was an El Gallo Giro. I used to walk by it sometimes in the morning… it was fascinating to me and I always paused for a minute thinking to go in, but since I was a lot younger then and just moved here, it was a little too intimidating for me. Anyway I almost cried when a few years later I found I never could try it, because it was replaced by a Burger King… Have eaten at many of the other El Garro Giro locations since then. El Pollo loco is a little better than BK, but not much.
So I really have mixed emotions about these mall food court places setting up shop… on the one hand I do think attracting more people is good for downtown, and as far as I know the other eateries right around there aren’t very good anyway. But the loss of character is really disturbing.
So now 3! Sbarro locations downtown: 3rd & Broadway, 7+Fig Mall, and the (depressing) Los Angeles Mall. Is there maybe one in the Fashion District also?
No more Burger Kings downtown, unless you want to count the one at Grand and Cesar Chavez. I don’t.
What are there like 28 Carl’s Jr locations downtown?
Hey, man, I went by there, and I didn’t see any Sbarro, just a Carl’s Jr. Where’s the Sbarro? Unless it’s actually INSIDE the Carl’s Jr. I am confused.
Scott: It should be in the space adjacent to Carl’s Jr. Check it out in this photo I took yesterday… http://flickr.com/photos/alossix/2119150976/
I think these would be good especially if they have late hours. That will be the true key to Broadway revitalization is if the resturants/eateries open later and they’re more than just Fast Food.
