new lapd headquarters already getting clad
Civic Center’s new postmodern LAPD Headquarters is speeding through its phases of construction. After topping out in what seemed like record time, the structure’s cream-colored facade is now being applied to the south elevation facing 2nd Street.
The “band” of exterior panels has already risen to the 4th floor and will eventually extend horizontally over the length of the building’s southern roof line.
This same facade material will dominate the long angular side opening up to 1st and Main streets.
The project has been scrutinized in recent months for its skyrocketing budget, with incremental rises now totaling a staggering $438 million of taxpayer dollars. The original price tag for Parker Center’s replacement was to be approximately $300 million.
At least we’ll be getting a park and some fancy architecture out of the deal.

Is there any other neighborhood amenities planned w/ the LAPD HQ besides the corner park? Neighborhood coffee, cafes, etc…? Also, what corner will the park be?
Thanksto two years of work by the Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council, instead of the park facing City Hall - it will face 2nd Street and the Higgins Building, and 1st Street will get the large concrete plaza. And instead of a 14 foot high retaining wall facing Main Street, at 2nd and Main the cafeteria will be outside of the building - with outdoor eating areas - and it will be open nights and weekends, there will be a couple reatil spaces along Main - hopefully one being an art gallery - and at 1st and Main, the Auditorium will be a free standing building that will be a public space nights and weekends.
Brady, I know there was a lot of work done to get what’s there, so, I appreciate all the hard work.
All that stuff will be nice, I’m just sorry we couldn’t get more park space.
