olvera street scores new coffee house and wine bar

Looking for information on Downtown LA?

Angelenic is the essential news resource for those living, working and visiting Downtown Los Angeles. Check out our Olvera Street Crowd, Downtown Los AngelesOlvera Street's former Bank of America space at 608 N. Main Street will soon be assimilated by its Latin environs.

Camacho's Inc., the food and beverage company who manages nearby El Paseo Inn and known for its Camacho's Cantina restaurants, is partnering with the city to establish a new Latino-inspired "coffee house/retail concept" on the outdoor promenade.

A Camacho's representative tells angelenic that "considerable attention will be given to producing a variety of high-quality coffee and coffee-based specialty beverages. Desserts such as pan dulce, pastries and other sweet treats will be served.”

But in case you’re feeling the need to mellow out instead of perk up, a selection of wines will be offered alongside the fresh brews and snacks.

When the new cafe opens later this year (we’re told “sometime in 2008”), it will be interesting to see how Casa de Sousa — the family-owned vegan coffee shop present on the street since 1932 — responds to the competition.

Hmm. Maybe they’ll open once in a while.
