suede bar & lounge coming to the bonaventure hotel
Described as LA’s “hottest new celebrity bar” and “a modern day Cheers, where everybody knows your name and the language you speak” — whatever that means — Suede Bar LA is making its home inside the Bonaventure Hotel later this month.
Details of the bar/lounge are scarce, though renderings show an interior with contemporary finishes.
It’s unclear how said celebrities will react to the sci-fi kitsch of the behemoth hotel — is it retro-cool or a dated concrete coffin?
Still, the red-colored lounge may be just what the Bonaventure needs to put some pep in its step. Let’s just hope Suede is a little more inviting than that other “celebrity bar.”

The aesthetic of the hotel is vintage mid-70s sci-fi. Think Logan’s Run or Rollerball. All that hulking concrete and how badly it hulks. Just awful. Totally disorienting. I suspect inebriated patrons will become lost in the maze of the buildings elevators and swirling floor plans.
This is what the future was supposed to look like before being overtaken by the neo-noir of Blade Runner. Fortunately, the future has turned out quite differently.
i liked logan’s run. and walking around the bonaventure, inebriated. good times.
there’s also the revolving bar at the top with the kitschy souvenir glasses, riding those cool elevators with those amazing city views, and waking up in a round hotel room. sorry, i just don’t think the bonaventure is as horrible as david makes it out to be.
i’ve sat and spun and drank many a time and would gladly go back again anytime.
I must confess I’ve not had the opportunity to consider the aesthetics of the Bonaventure while tipsy. I will defer to the insight of those with more experience. Alas, I’m not sure when I’ll get the chance.
I don’t like the decor here. I think downtown needs more funky spots in historic buildings for hip/fun locals, or super posh places on the roof of skyscrapers for regional party goers.
I guess the hotels wants to attract 20-30 something jetsetters to downtown, but the decor just seems to pale in comparison to greater LA stand outs.
I’d like to see something fresh inside that dead old glass building. I work at the Standard down the street and I’d like to see that convention hotel staff deal with Hipsters and bottle service and all that noise.
Hipsters are hard to please. We shall see what happens.
Any updates on when this place is supposed to open?
John,
June 15th they’re having an “Open House” from 6-9pm and they’ll be open to the public on June 22nd according to Joe (Suede manager? I believe…)
According to the answering machine, it said June 20th.
It’s actually June 22nd - I’m writing about it this week, maybe today.
