free clippers tickets for 25th year anniversary
For all you Downtown sports fans, here’s a chance to “get in the game” this month with free Clippers tickets.
In celebration of the Clippers’ 25th year of basketball in Los Angeles (1984 - 2009), the team is giving out two complimentary tickets to their first three preseason home games. Just fill out this form, print out your ticket voucher, and cash it in at the Staples Center box office during normal business hours.
Hopefully this is enough advance notice so you’re not left in the nose bleeds, and since supplies are limited there’s a big disclaimer stating registration does not guarantee tickets to your requested game.

cole’s opens november 16, restoring cross-town rivalry
Cole’s PE Buffet, the 1908 restaurant undergoing a renovation by barman Cedd Moses of 213 Ventures, is set to open its doors once again on November 16, Metromix reports.
The opening comes just in time to celebrate 100 years in Downtown — as uptown rival Philippe’s did earlier this week — even though the restaurant and bar has spent most of the past year under construction in the ground floor of the Pacific Electric Lofts.
Last month blogdowntown reported that Cole’s signage has been relit; the new lighting is still being tested.
In the kitchen, Cole’s new chef Neal Fraser, previously of Grace and BLD, will be tackling the French dip phenom head-on. Eater LA has an in-depth interview with Fraser on what he plans for the menu, which will be a more gourmet version of the sandwich using high-quality ingredients.

Between Bunker Hill’s Casa and South Park’s Rivera, Downtown will be hit hard this year with modern Latin cuisine and the retro-edgy style that accompanies it.
Since construction began in July, the large restaurant space underneath Two California Plaza has taken on a new shape — or more accurately, several shapes. Curvaceous booths and half-walls, some almost pod-like, fill the patio and main room of Casa that give it the flair of a Jetsons living room.
The restaurant will be quick-service during the day to cope with the usual lunch frenzy, reverting to full-service mode during planned evening and weekend hours.
By way of Eater LA, we know that Mario Del Pero of nearby Mendocino Farms is behind the venture, relying on ex-Blue Velvet head chef Kris Morningstar to preside over the kitchen. Ana Henton, who many Downtowners will know from underground-cafeteria Lemonade, is the mastermind behind Casa’s whimsy concept.

A month after their low-key debut in the fashion district, Gram and Papa’s owner Mike Ilic is enjoying the fruits of his labor.
But he’s not done yet.
Despite the positive customer feedback, Ilic says there is still much work to be done in growing and perfecting his restaurant concept.
The goal is to maintain high quality, fast service and a superior level of customer satisfaction. Ilic believes you have one chance to make a good impression and have people coming back for more.
A recent customer visited four times in one day, so they must be doing something right.

It’s Art Walk night in Downtown, and with it, as always, comes new businesses hoping to turn the occasion into their own housewarming celebrations.
This time around, it wasn’t the restaurant everyone expected — Blu LA Cafe at Pacific Electric Lofts came back to us last minute, pointing fingers at city inspectors for their missed opening.
No surprise there, but their delay only puts a bigger spotlight on Little Tokyo’s Spitz, who held a “soft, soft opening” tonight, as put by co-owner Bryce Rademan, in their new location on 2nd Street next to boutique clothing store Kimski Makes.
Actually, it was more of a sneak peek opportunity for area residents to take a look around the finished space. Besides some pretty impressive metal sculptures hanging from the ceiling, free drinks at the bar lured people through the doors.
A real grand opening for business will follow in the next two weeks.
pedestrian violation enforcement on the rise in downtown
Watch out, criminals! Increased resources in the form of eight bike cops and foot patrols have been allocated to Downtown’s Central Division, specifically west of Spring Street to the 110 Freeway, said Senior Lead Officer Marco Duarte.
The increase in resources allocated to our neighborhood is a sign that city leaders are taking our concerns seriously and should be applauded.
However, the problem is that according to Duarte, the new patrols are focusing heavily on “pedestrian enforcement” in the Financial District and Historic Core, meaning jaywalking and crossing the street on a blinking “hand” signal.
It’s a great day in Downtown LA when all our community has to worry about is the errant IT administrator a little too focused on his BlackBerry or the waiter running across the street to catch a bus. But when did our neighborhood cross that threshold?
Call me crazy: It hasn’t.
