trees at vista hermosa park, school to open this fall

Fresh mulch, planted trees, benches and even a windmill in place at City West’s new Vista Hermosa Park say the sprawling hillside greenspace is ready to start welcoming nature-loving Downtowners; but piles of gravel, grading equipment and bare dirt slopes affirm there’s more left to be done.

Originally, the park component of the Vista Hermosa complex was to run on a separate construction schedule from the school, but as progress continues to linger, the two halves may come online around the same time. On September 3, the notorious Central Los Angeles High School #11 — formally known as Edward R. Roybal Learning Centerwill be opening its educational facilities after years of pricey delays and setbacks.

Come this fall, the intersection of 1st and Beaudry will graduate from perpetual construction zone to active pedestrian zone, bringing in teenage students, dog walkers, picnickers and families with small children to an area of Downtown few currently visit on foot. Once Canvas LA’s new retail strip leases up across the street, add shoppers to that list.

-canvas la brushes color on city west

Me too! This park is going to incredible for Downtown - the easy access and skyline views will be unmatched. I’m keeping a close eye on this one.

1) Is there decent public transit access? I’m not familier with the bus routes in the area.
2) Has an actual opening date been set for the park or is the opening date for when the school opens?

The Metro bus 14 & 714 will get you there. The bus line runs north on Olive then east on 1st to Vista Hermosa. The bus stop is at 1st and Beaudry…

It’s going to be a great addition to all of Downtown. It’s just a shame that every single design feature is so awful - far worse in person than in the pictures - and none of it matches. Hopefully, lots of vines will be planted. But, still, it’s great to have a park of this size in that location.
