Wokcano Downtown LAAfter a long and rocky road, the new Wokcano at 7th and Flower has finally received City inspection approvals to open its doors this Thursday, March 6.

Originally aiming for a holiday opening, the small but growing chain was bogged down by red tape and inspection delays while it sat nearly completed for many weeks. Last time we checked in with Assistant Manager Richard Querney, the cafe was retraining employees in preparation for the launch.

Wokcano, one of the more substantial businesses to hit 7th Street recently, will have hours until 2:00am daily.

We’ll update with more information on the official Grand Opening as it becomes available.

Wokcano Cafe
800 W 7th Street

I’ll believe it when I see the first bowl of rice cross the counter; my office is in the same building, and they’ve been “about to open” for a year or so, now; restaurants have opened and closed downtown in the interim (Mode, for instance…)

Silverlake, Wokcano has only been close to opening since late December. That was their original target. We’ve been in close contact with the managers of the restaurant since last month. They’ve been reluctant to state a date until now b/c of the health departmant delays.

If Richard tells us they’re opening tomorrow, then get ready for your rice bowl.

Wokcano looked packed tonight. Great (reasonably-priced and no small dishes!) new dining option in the Financial District.

Only complaint is that they used the 3 street parking spots on Flower south of 7th for valet parking service. I hope this was just a one-time occurance. We cannot continue having on-street parking jeopardized for each new restaurant; it kills the “complete streets” concept.

Rich and I went with friends last night to Wokcano - had a great time! The food was tasty (just slightly cold, but probably had to do with the vent above me blowing in air from the pole). The lighting, mood and crowd was perfect! Overall, as good as I had hoped - but we knew what we were getting.

Oh, FYI - They’re only serving beer and wine for now.

Regarding valet park… Neel, don’t tell me you drove from the Skyline?

I had a great time at Wokcano, but I probably won’t go back.

Like I said there, if you want good sushi, go to Little Tokyo. If you want good Chinese, go to Chinatown.

If you want the above for double the price, go to Wokcano.

Friday - no way will I drive in downtown. Haha. I’m just not a big fan of having to build more parking lots/garages. Street parking slows cars to a reasonable speed in urban areas, reduces the need for parking lots/garages, and gives the pedestrian a buffer between the sidewalk and speeding cars. Plus, it’s kinda cool seeing people park their cars and walk on the sidewalk instead of going into parking garages.
